Gaius Knows

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters, TV show, or nothing

Note: I wrote this to the tune of Queens of the Stone Age "No-one knows", hence the title

Gaius smiled wryly to himself as he pottered around his apothecary, replenishing his always-in-demand store of lotions and potions upon which the well-being of the people relied. However, it wasn't just the physical ailments that he tended to. On occasion, he would also be called upon for his advice for ailments of the heart and spirit, though it was true it did not happen so often now that he had now reached an age which was officially considered 'old'. It seemed that once one reached a certain age, people thought that one never knew what love was, let alone might ever have experienced such a thing!

Love. Now that, Gaius thought, was the most mysterious affliction of them all. His hand paused on its way to lift an empty vial from its place on the shelf as memories of a distant past returned to him. His own 'affliction' had come in the form of a beautiful druidess with long chestnut hair, sparkling emerald eyes and porcelain skin. The King's healer and advisor's eyes grew misty. It had been in a time before Uther's reign when the Old Religion had still been strong but all that had changed when the old king died and his son had scourged the kingdom of magic following the death of his queen. Any plans which the younger Gaius had made with his lady mage had died as surely as she had died on the executioner's block. He remembered well the pain as part of his being was lost at the same the axe fell.

Gaius blinked away the moisture in his eyes and continued to pluck down the vessels that required refilling as his mind turned to a love story that was unfolding in the present. He knew that the world saw him simply as an old man who sometimes had the King's ear and was also quite useful with his healing potions. Other than that, people tended not to pay too much notice to him and he most often saw what others thought he could not and this was no less true of that between the young Prince of Camelot and the Lady Morgana's maid.

He had noted long before, the burgeoning feeling between the two. He had seen the looks that the two shared even when the Prince was giving the King a report. Gaius did not miss the fleeting, secret smiles that appeared when they were in the same room and every suspicion that he had was confirmed when he saw Arthur take Gwen's hand in his own and place it over his heart, the depth of feeling that they had for each other shining bright in their eyes.

Gaius had seen too much, been through too much to make any conclusions about where the future of the two would-be lovers would take them. With any luck, the Gods would smile upon them and allow their lives to join as surely as their hearts and souls already had.
