What's That Coming over the Hill?
Day One:
Charlie Matheson is a tough cookie. She can do anything. Getting the master key for a few prison cells on a ship was no problem whatsoever. The training master knows she's trouble. The doctor knows she's trouble. Her fellow recruits are terrified of her. It's only a matter of time before she can break them.
Her nickname, by the end of the first day, is Monster. There is speculation that she's actually General Carol Hall's spawn. She's left alone after that, just in case.
Day Two:
Speculation about Charlie's parentage is almost confirmed when she starts a fight, for no reason, in the line at the chow hall. The training master is, according to the rumors Charlie hears from the brig, drinking heavily every time a report comes across his desk.
She thinks it's hilarious. Charlie knows she's a Matheson. There's nothing a Matheson can't do. Including driving a training master on a conscription ship to drink. She kind of wants to meet Carol Hall now.
Day Three:
The training master, Charlie hears, began sobbing in relief when the ship is attacked. She knows she's a Matheson. They can do anything. She broke a training master in three days. Her dad wrote an impressive piece of code. Her uncle used to rule the world. Her mother was one of the foremost programmers in the world at one time.
Charlie's claim to fame is completely destroying one of the toughest training masters in the whole of the Monroe Militia in three days.
She whistles a song Nora taught her as they leave the boat. "What's that coming over the hill, is it a monster, is it a monster…?"
It is, she thinks, entirely too appropriate.
