Disclaimer: I own nothing!!

It was five in the morning.

Lily Evans sat in a large chair by a roaring fireplace, clasping and unclasping her hands nervously.

This was the day. She told herself that again and again, but it was still hard to get her head around.

She couldn't keep herself together around Potter anymore… why?

Thoughts of that boy flew through her mind at the speed of that werewolf that was outside tonight.

He was accompanied by three animals. He always was.

Lily had long ago decided who those three were, after being charged by the werewolf and rescued by the stag.

It was sort of obvious after that.

The stag was James.

James.

It was a strong name, it fit him well.

She was waiting for him.

She thought about her fifth year, the last one she'd completed.

She wasn't exactly nice… or pleasant… but he was there.

Ten minutes went by painstakingly, but finally, three boys crashed through the portrait hole.

Lily stood.

"hello," she said quietly.

Sirius somehow looked mischievous and dazed at the same time. He dragged Peter after him up to the boys dormitory.

"hi," James replied, sounding so exhausted that Lily almost felt bad making him stay awake, but this had to be said.

"can I talk to you?" she asked.

"can it wait until tomorrow?" James asked.

He hated to ask, but he couldn't see straight.

"um… sure," was her reply.

"great," James said, then he went upstairs.

Lily sank back into the chair with large tears begging to come out.

She knew that she wouldn't do it tomorrow.

That's why it had to be tonight.

She went upstairs to sleep, knowing that she couldn't.

Over the course of the night, her mind told her that if he really cared about her, he would have waited to hear her.

She'd stayed up as late as he had.

Fine.

She was almost mad at him by morning.

Lily felt a miniature battle going on inside of her.

On one hand, she really liked him.

On the other, he didn't care about her, not really.

She got dressed and went downstairs for breakfast with no cover story as to why she had stayed up to all hours.

"hi," James said in his usual cocky manner.

"hi," Lily returned stiffly.

James frowned, "what's wrong?" he asked.

Lily wanted to scream at him. how could he be so clueless? "nothing." She said coolly.

James didn't take that answer very well, "well, what did you want to say this morning?" he asked.

Lily took a tiny breath, "nothing." She whispered.

"Lily," James begged.

"I… I have to go," then she was gone.

James stared after her with his mouth open. He knew that he'd done something… again.

Of course it was his fault.

What had he done this time?

The same thing he always did.

He blew it.

It would take a long time after that. He had to prove again and again that he cared about her, even more than before, but finally she saw it.

And she saw him.

A/N- I found this in my computer tonight, and decided to share it with you!!
