STOPPING BY

Bailey slammed the front door to her New York apartment closed. Her keys were tossed into the key bowl. Her bag removed and slung into the corner, not to be touched for the entirety of the weekend. She sighed as she stepped out of her shoes and made a b-line for the couch. She met the cushions face first, released a pleased sound, and burrowed deeper intending to let the stress of her week of graduate studies just before finals fall away and nap.

Her plan was disturbed when the insistent ringing of her cell phone pierced her consciousness and prompted her to answer.

She fished the phone out of her pocket and rolled onto her back to answer. "Hello?" she cleared her throat when she heard the roughness of it and tried again, "Hello?"

She could hear the amusement in the lightly accented voice that replied, "Hello, Bailey."

"Jess!" Bailey couldn't stop the smile from spreading across her face, not that she tried, "I thought you said you'd be out of contact for the shoot?"

"I was. But they've changed the location and the shoot's delayed."

Bailey sat up and devoted her attention to listening, "Changed the location?"

"Mm," Bailey heard a slamming car door and the sudden sound of rushing traffic. Jessica's voice rose over the noise, "Our photographer wasn't happy with the accommodations, threw a fit, and demanded the shoot be moved to Cabo."

"Cabo?" Bailey asked, "What's in Cabo?"

The traffic sounds disappeared and she heard Jessica chuckle, "The photographer's condo. Apparently it has the absolute perfect scenery for the tropical theme."

Bailey imagined Jessica's smile when she laughed, "What did your agent have to say to that?"

"As long as we didn't have to pay the flight fees she was fine," she could practically hear the shrug in Jessica's voice.

"So where are you now? The hotel? Airport?"

Knocking on Bailey's front door interrupted any answer Jessica might have made.

Bailey said "hold on" to Jessica on the phone, stood, and walked to her door. Undoing the locks she opened the door and promptly dropped her phone. "Jess!"

Jessica stood smiling and radiant in the hallway as she closed her own phone and slid it into her pocket. "Hey you."

Bailey launched herself onto the slightly taller Jessica and latched on in a bear hug. She squeezed Jessica tightly and said "Hey you." When she released Jessica she stepped back and pulled her into the apartment asking excitedly, "What are you doing here?"

"My flight doesn't leave until tomorrow evening," Jessica replied, "so I thought I'd spend the meantime with you...if that's alright?"

"Of course it's alright!" Bailey locked her door and pulled Jessica deeper into the apartment until they were both standing before the couch, "You know I'm always glad to see you."

"That's good," Jessica said, "Otherwise the next twenty-four hours would have been unbearably awkward."

They both laughed.

They stayed just smiling at each other for a long moment, then Bailey stretched up and kissed Jessica's cheek. "Welcome home."
