The Art of Waiting
by Sanguine Ageha

"Can you wait for me?"
The question Hitachiin Hikaru had fired at her was not something she expected to hear. She was very much surprised, to say the least. After all, it was not everyday she heard such a serious inquisition from the older twin of the prankster duo that did not regard any double meaning.
Fujioka Haruhi blinked, not quite sure of how or what to answer. What could he be possibly plotting up his sleeve? However, she decided to shrug off her doubts. She looked at the waiting redhead and answered, "Why should I? You and Kaoru always go home together."
The right corner of Hikaru's mouth tugged into a light smirk. But he quickly covered it up by producing a small laugh. To be honest, he never saw that one coming, and yet he should have expected a response like that from Haruhi right from the start.
Despite the obliviousness of the girl, he had meant every word he said. He would wait for her, even if he knew that he had the ability to claim her as his own. Of course, Haruhi would not want that. She did not tolerate childishness and she proved that in Karuizawa when she slapped him for insulting Arai. If he only thought about himself and his desire for her to be gratified immediately, would that not result to an irreparable demise? Loathing him to his deathbed was one of the great possibilities.
For someone so selfish, Hikaru wished to rid of his self-centeredness to be able to capture Haruhi's attention. It was not easy, this he knew; this girl was not like any other. She was not one of those fangirls of theirs who gushed over the incestuous display of affection he and his brother threw to cater to their fancies. Rather, she was the first person in the world of "them" who successfully told them apart.
The special student had now become a special person to him. Their times spent together told him that, and it took a set-up date (thanks to Kaoru) to make him realize the feelings he was beginning to have for her.
And so he would wait. It was too early to tell what the results might be but this did not bother him. He was more than just willing, he was determined. He would wait for her and continue to do so until the logic of his question sank into her mind; until he had grown up and she would take notice of it; until she beheld him in a new light and had a proper reply to offer.
He would wait, until then…

For a start, this is my first Ouran fanfic. The idea for this one-shot was a spur of the moment thing, explaining the shortness of it. Second, it's been four years since I last wrote something anime-related, so please spare me the flames. Comments and concrit, on the other hand, would be greatly appreciated.
