Overture

by Leafy

Rating: PG for scary imagery

Author's Note: I'm in the process of writing a series of LOTR fanfics with titles that are also titles of most of the songs on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra album "Beethoven's Last Night". All of the stories are going to be linked. That's right, my first series! :o)

This poem is the introduction to the entire series. It probably won't make much sense now, but as the other stories come up, it will. I hope you like it!

Disclaimer: I own nothing Tolkien or Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Also, I'd like to thank Gapofrohan and Moonfairy2000 for the reviews I've received from them, for my last story. They were very nice. Thanks!

Overture

Beware the dark,

Don't sit alone

It's risk you can't afford

When I'm about

In all my strength

You'd best act in accord

With what we say

And what we warn

We tell you not to do

I look inside

You cannot hide

What I know to be true

To punish waywardness of deed

Of those who won't follow our lead

We offer this; a world of strife

Until you live a better life

Do what we say

Give me what's mine

Or receive the menace I define:

Darkness, ever, never ending

Eyes and mind, it forces rending

Weakness, doubt, and fear of failing

From his poor eyes, there'll be no veiling

Of what's to come, what he must end

Can he do it without his friends?

You may speak, but it is only words

Flying, fleeting, away like birds

And next, a challenge even graver

You must act as your own savior

Seems not bad, but true, it's worse

It can be the cruelest curse

And then, attraction

Don't pretend

You did not know how it would end

In everyone, such greed and commotion

You cannot think across the ocean

He'll dream of the sea, though

Count the cost

When he realizes what he's lost

What was his, and sacred being

Preserved his life; he'll find it fleeting

What he is now, all alone

With time that now will rot his bones

But then, who would guess

I have a gift

That could be meant to mend the rift

But this gift does not go kindly

With this gift, he thinks he binds me

To the promise that I make

But he cannot know of all I take

After, perhaps worst of all

If none else does, this brings your fall

Fire, flames, conflagration

In pursuit, there's no cessation

To the danger, to the heat

No water quenches

You'll roast like meat

But then, what is natural?

What do you fight?

Out of protection from their spite

And how do they die?

It is not trying?

It will be now, when they stop their dying

Secrets that are very frightening

You cannot sense the danger heightening

Look into his eyes

Then you will see

The creature lurking from the trees

Gloom, the darkness, dim nightshade

Fear is alive, it will not fade

Wondering and uncertainty,

Doubt in triumph, in victory

Then false semblance

Meshed with true

Is that me or is that you?

Confess now

What do you fear the most?

That you are not you

But your family's ghost?

Do not be diverted

It is back again

Lure you wish not to comprehend

Then sadness

Sadness devastating

Loneliness that's unabating

And finally, should you survive

Do know, it's on this game I thrive

The child

Sweet and mystifying

Such naïve manner

Could he be lying?

Will you ever learn to learn and see

That child is no child

That child is me

So now

Consider this a warning

When dawn breaks

You shan't see morning

All these threats and horrid deeds

Done to make you soon concede

Will be your fortune

Unless you now

Give me what you have

What I'll get somehow

It gets worse with time

Just give me what's mine

If so, you won't suffer

You will all be fine

And you will all be mine
