Helen...
I can finally see
That you're right there beside me.
I am on my own.
For I have been made new,
Please don't let me go.
I desperately need you.
The words of the song washed over Helen as she absentmindedly drove around, listening to the radio. She really didn't know what she was doing, or where she was going. She had yelled at Nikola for no reason. Now, the gentle words of Owl City's Meteor Shower soothed her, and she felt regretful. She suddenly jerked off the road and headed back towards the Sanctuary, tears forming
Nikola...
I can finally see
That you're right there beside me.
I am on my own.
For I have been made new,
Please don't let me go.
I desperately need you.
He really wasn't angry with Helen. He understood. He felt that way every year, on the day his brother died. Now it was her turn to mourn Ashley every year. He was listening to the radio as he tinkered with some pieces of metal, trying to make something useful. He listened to the second line of the song, nearly identical to the first. He thought it almost matched his hidden love for Helen. He told her once that he loved her. She didn't believe him. He was, in some way, happy that Druitt had rescued her from him. He might have lost control of his vampires, they would have attacked Helen, drained her... He might have enough time to save her by turning her into a vampire, but he wasn't sure. He then heard Helen's truck drive into the pristine garage, and he went down to meet her.
Combined...
She got out of the car and he could see she was trying to hold back tears: Her eyes were full, her cheeks were red, and her lips were pursed. He walked forward and carefully enveloped her in a gentle hug. To his surprise, she returned the hug. Then her tears broke loose. He rocked her back and forth while her back heaved in sobs.
"I'm sorry Nikola. Should I leave?" She asked through the tears.
"You don't have to leave. Just let yourself cry."
She nodded, and he cradled her in his arms and carried her to her room. He gently took off her coat and shoes and tucked her in. The tears were still flowing, but he could see she was nearly asleep. He made to leave, but she set a hand on his arm and said "Don't go. Please just hold me... I need you."
He couldn't say no to her, so he climbed in beside her and began again to rock her. As her sobs began to subside, he started to softly sing.
"I can finally see
That you're right there beside me.
I am on my own.
For I have been made new,
Please don't let me go.
I desperately need you."
She had stopped crying by this point and was just staring at him. Her eyes began to close, and he said "I love you Helen."
Just before she fell asleep, she softly whispered "I love you too, Niko."
