"MMPH!" Hermione jumped, grabbing at her pocket.
"You OK?" asked Ron.
"Yes, it's only my mobile telephone. For, you know, emergencies at home and the like. Flitwick charmed it for me so it would work here." She retrieved the buzzing phone from her pocket. "Alright already!" she scolded it, flipping it open. "Hello?"
Ron could only hear muffled mumblings coming from the other end.
"Yes, this is she." Hermione frowned and furrowed her brow, taking in a deep breath. She slid down slowly against the wall.
"I understand. I'll be there as quickly as possible. Thank you." Hermione drew the phone away from her ear. She didn't close it, though; she just held it out, staring at it. The screen flickered and dimmed, but she just stared, unseeing.
"Hermione, you alright, love?" Ron went down on his right knee. She snapped the phone shut.
"Of course I'm alright, Ronald." Her voice rose shrilly with every word. "Why wouldn't I be perfectly fine? Why wouldn't I be perfectly, utterly excruciatingly fine? I have no reason to be unhappy. I mean, my parents were just Adava Kedavra'd, but that's not important, because I'm. JUST. FINE!" She threw the phone across the hall, and it exploded in a marriage of magic and physical force.
"Merlin, I'm – I'm - "
"What, sorry? Don't you dare say that you're sorry, because you're just NOT!" She lunged forward, fists clenched. "Don't say it, don't say it, DON'T SAY IT!" She pounded against his chest. Pounding, a drum, a heartbeat, a lifeline.
"DON'T! Don't! Don't, don't…" She collapsed, chest heaving with silent, wracking, heart-wrenching sobs. Ron cradled her body as it shrunk in grief, rocking as he did Bill's child. He pressed his lips to her forehead. She lifted her tear-heavy doe eyes towards Ron.
"Let's see Minerva, love." Hermione nodded. She closed her eyes as he stroked her hair, and he stood, lifting her with him. And as she rested her head on his shoulder, he carried her to stability.
