Okay. Before you punish me, this was a homework assignment. I just worked really hard on it, and I'm a huge biology geek. I was supposed to write a poem about the organelles of a cell. It's in miscellaneous because there are books about cells somewhere.

THE ORGANELLE SONG (The Geek Song)

The instructions were to write a poem

Using all the organelles

I tried my best, and here it is-

All of the parts of the cell.

The nucleus controls all functions in the cell,

Has a nuclear membrane and nuclear pores

Which protect it and let certain materials pass

In and out, like semi-permeable doors.

Golgi apparatus and ER are alike

But the ER works with the nucleus, and to it ribosomes are stuck.

Golgi bodies send materials to different parts of a cell

And vesicles carry them around like a UPS truck.

Steroid and lipid synthesis are functions of smooth ER

It also breaks toxins and chemicals down.

That's a process known as detoxification

And ribosomes don't stick around.

Rough ER, on the other hand

Has to do with protein synthesis

It's very different from smooth ER

And ribosomes are attached to this.

Cytosol and cytoplasm often are confused

Cytosol is just the fluid in the cell

Cytoplasm is basically the same,

But it contains the organelles.

Mitochondria have a double membrane

They give the cell energy.

They have a matrix and christae inside

And produce ATP

Adenosine Tri Phosphate or ATP

Is a kind of nucleotide.

But it has THREE phosphate groups,

That's how it is modified.

The cytoskeleton helps the cell maintain its shape

And is involved in the cell's moving around

Centrioles help organize cell division

And in plants are never found.

Two things that are ONLY found in plants

Are chloroplasts and a cell wall

Chloroplasts capture sun energy and convert it into food

Cell wall protects the cell, and never moves at all.

Phospholipids' hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail

Make up the lipid bilayer, and in it, integral proteins are nestled in

These proteins are hydrophilic tunnels, the tails are hydrophobic tunnels

But both help get materials out and in.

Ribosomes make proteins, and can be "free" or attached

Lysosomes break old organelles down, and clean up waste

They break down lipids, carbs and proteins for energy

Vacuoles contain water and materials, and provide storage space.
