"10 drabbles, 10 topics challenge" of HPFC forum. Prompt: One word of dialogue only- "stay"

She had been watching. She knew it was coming.

Remus had been distant for days, after having woken from some nightmare in the middle of the night. He'd given her a look of such loathing after he woke fully that that she knew it was only a matter of time before he left her.

She didn't try to stop him. She didn't even ask what was wrong. She just watched as he lost himself to fantasies and old broken dreams, taking with him his love and his sanity.

He worried. He worried for her, for the baby inside her, but mostly, he fretted for the boy he'd called a son for seventeen years who had gone missing a few weeks ago with his two closest friends. It was because of this that she knew where he was going when he packed up in the middle of the night and started to walk out the door.

She told herself that she would allow him to leave. She told herself over and over again that those bold teenagers wouldn't have an issue with kicking his ass and telling him to get back to her. She said it time and time again, each time he put a little more distance between them.

Still. "Stay," she whispered, just before he touched the doorknob. He hesitated. He looked back at her. She stared into amber eyes and felt her hair begin to darken. She felt the tears rise in her eyes.

He opened the door and walked away.

And she curled up on their bed and cried.
