Disclaimer: I don't own Fullmetal Alchemist.

A/N: A random thought I had while reading the manga..... although I hate comparing Ed to Tucker, it IS kinda true. Human transmutation is a bad thing, right? And we all ... strongly dislike Tucker for it, right? Then why don't we view Ed the same way?

Summary: It's in the middle of the night when Ed realizes he's not so different from Shou Tucker after all. Ficlet.

Realization

He's sitting up straight in his bed, eyes darting around from his dream. He swallows thickly and rakes a hand through his messy hair. It's that dream again, where his mother smiles that bloody smile, and everything ... his world falls down around him.

Human transmutation, he thinks, letting a bitter smile linger on his lips. The one line you're not supposed to cross, and yet he had crossed it with a huge leap. He lazily glances over to where his brother is, leaning against the wall, then lays back down. Ed lets his mind wander, and it wanders to Shou Tucker and what was once Nina and Alexander. That's human transmutation, isn't it? Messing with things you aren't supposed to mess with, and getting it straight back to you.

He stares at his metal arm, and watches the moonlight glint off of it. It had been done for different reasons, yet was there really a difference? He flexed his fingers.

It's in the middle of the night when Ed realizes he's not so different from Shou Tucker after all.
