RUBY'S POV

Pauline and I have always been friends. I tell her everything. She's the one I've always leaned on, through everything. There wasn't much to cry about, but no matter how minuscule, she. Was. There. It wasn't until today that everything changed.
Pauline has a twin sister– Melissa. We call ourselves the Gingers, since we're all redheads. We have since second grade.
It's the day before school starts; Pauline, Melissa, and I are all going into 11th grade. It's pretty exciting. Pauline and Melissa are already 16, and I turn 16 on September 6th. I can tell it's going to be a good year.
"Hey," I casually wave at Pauline, the close of the trio to me. She grins. I cock my head to the right. I tap my finger tip on my chin. "Let me guess..." I tap my chin dramatically and study her face. It's bubbling with excitement. There's a shininess in her eyes. Is that...?
"Love," I whisper, then clear my throat. "A boyfriend?"
She groans. "How do you always guess?"
I shrug. "I guess I just know you."
She grins even wider, grabs my hand, and drags me into the house. We giggle and stumble all the way to her bedroom upstairs. Melissa and Pauline share a room, but Melissa is at camp until tomorrow morning.
"Here he is..." she reaches under her bed (the left of the two twin beds) and pulls out her diary. Pauline then flops onto the bed and practically rips it open.
I stop giggling and scooch in next to her. There's a picture in the book, of her and a guy. He's slightly taller with brown eyes. His hair is blond and waves up, kind of like a cowlick, at the front. I have to say, he's pretty cute.
"Transfer," she explains, looking at my confused expression. At least she thought it was confused. I was mesmerized by him. "He came a few weeks ago, across town. His parents are friends with mine, and..."
"You didn't tell me," I half-fake a pout, disappointed not only that she kept a secret from me, but that I didn't get to date him first. "His name's —"
"Don't tell me. I want to meet him for myself," I say, and catch another glimpse of his eyes before she snaps the book shuts and slides it back under the bed.
