"So on page 124, Holden talks to...who?" Spencer was on the front porch with Toby at the Cavanaugh house, nervously sneaking glances at Jenna's window. She could see dark glasses peeking out of the curtains. This week, Spencer had forced Toby to read Catcher in the Rye,by J.D. Salinger. Toby didn't want to admit it, but it was really not that bad of a book. In an uncanny way, the main protagonist, Holden Caulfield, was a lot like him.

"He talks to his old girlfriend, that lady-Sally Hayes?"Toby answered, flicking a stray piece of lint off his shirt absentmindedly. He flipped through the pages of his battered copy. Spencer's was new, he noticed, like she had just gotten it at Barnes & Noble. Toby thought it was cute she went out of her way to buy the book so they could read and learn together. But a bad part of him knew Spencer just wanted to know information about who was Alison DiLaurentis' murder. The horrid, demonic part of him.

"Great. Perfect. But why did he talk to his girlfriend?" Spencer asked. She had been drilling questions, one after another, since 8:30 this morning. It was now ten, and Toby didn't have the nerve or manner to tell her he had a court case to go to in fifteen minutes.

"I don't know?" Toby nervously glanced around the block. He fidgeted with his fingers, a bad habit of his. He saw a police car drive past down the block a ways.

"Toby," Spencer looked sincerely at him,"Is there something going on?" her eyes prodded him, daring to expose his secrets. He noticed how pretty her eyes were, how they were one solid chocolate color, melted together. It dawned on Toby that Spencer was one of the pretties girls he had ever laid eyes on.

"Toby?" Spencer waved a hand over his face, the corners of her mouth slightly upturned." You're spacing out. You have somewhere to be?"

Toby considered his options. He could either A)go to the court case or B)stay with Spencer and not have to face the Rosewood police and their accusations and false assumptions. Spencer was serious and studious and playful and funny and pretty and the one who, Toby now realized, the one he wanted to be with. He really, truly liked Spencer, and was just now opening his eyes and admitting he liked her...as much more than a friend.

"Screw this." Toby said suddenly, making Spencer jump a bit. He wasn't doing Plan A or B (well, it was along the lines of B) But his new and improved plan. After A and B. A, B, C. Plan C.

"Spencer," he said, grabbing her wrist, sending fireworks up Spencer's arm and making her feel bubbly all over, "Let's go."

"Where?"

"Somewhere yummy." he smiled. Spencer returned it, beaming, actually getting her happiness reach her gorgeous eyes.

And Toby abandoned A and B and took Spencer out to get ice cream. They ate it on the curb, licking each others cones occasionally, playfully punching each other whenever a Volkswagen Bug drove by. And for the first time, Toby was happy with his decision. His Plan C.

R&R please! follow me and stuff :)))) short and sweet!
