[This is a pre-Byzantium River and a post-Demon's Run Rory.]

"Do you understand why I couldn't go with you when you came to Stormcage?"

Rory nodded, looking out of the corner of his eyes at River. He was still trying to accept the fact that this woman, this mad woman, was his daughter. It had only been a month since their trip to Demon's Run, and the Ponds were still waiting on the Doctor to come back with news of baby Melody. River was frustratingly unhelpful in the matter, and Rory was fairly certain he had never heard her say "spoilers" so many times before. "Yeah, I get it. If you had been there there would've been no chance of us losing the younger you. We would've taken that place without a hitch. Massive paradox, I suppose?"

"Yes." River sipped her wine and set it back on the patio table they were seated at. "I would've saved myself. There would have been no way for me to resist doing it if I had been there. The simple solution was for me to wait to be there until the very end."

After a long pause, Rory teased, "You missed all my badass Roman fighting skills."

She laughed. "I've seen your plastic badass Roman fighting skills."

"What, the gun in my hand? No, that was rubbish compared to the sword! This was proper sword fighting. Well, sort of."

"It's not as if it's the last time you ever use the sword. And I didn't tell you that! No, you have no idea about any of your future at all because I had nothing to do with it."

"Oi, I know your future too!"

"You'd only just met me when the Pandorica opened, though!"

He took a drink of his wine. "Stories. From the Doctor and Amy. Mostly the Doctor. About two days after we came home, he came to our house. I think he was a future version. I dunno. But he told us everything he knew about you, or at least everything we could know up until now. And I'm proud of all the things I heard from them, River. You make me so proud."

River rested a hand on her father's forearm, a smile spreading across her face. "I was always proud of you too, Dad."

A/N: I seriously LOVE writing Rory/River father-daughter-y stuff, and I really don't know why I don't do it more often. The dynamic between them is just wonderful (which probably stems a bit from Alex and Arthur being such good friends). Honestly, though, Rory's dad-mode wasn't displayed enough in the series, but if you watch earlier episodes you can tell that Moffat knew what he was going to do with them from the moment he decided to create Rory. You don't really pick up on it much until you see AGMGTW, and then it's kinda like, wow omg Rory is such a good dad even though at this point his daughter is older than he is and he doesn't even know she's his daughter but holy cow am I ever glad that Moffat gave us these sweet little things to get us through the hard times.
