WAIT JUST A MINUTE

The last thing D had expected to see when he opened his door was a smiling Rau Wu Fei. Dressed in his customary black suit with his hair slicked back, he looked very pleased with himself. And that could only mean trouble.

"Good morning," D murmured politely, nodding his head to the building manager. "And what brings you to my shop so early, Taizu?"

Rau Wu Fei gestured toward the man standing beside him, still as a statue, face impassive. "I've come to shut you down, Count D."

D's eyebrows arched in mock surprise. "Really? Good heavens, why would you want to do a think like that? I operate my pet shop within the strict confines of the law, selling animals from ordinary dogs and cats to exotic creatures that just scrape past the Washington Treaty." The words had a bored air as if recited many times. Then he added almost acidly, "I have done nothing wrong."

"Is that so?" The Taizu sneered. "Well, this gentleman has a warrant to search your premises. I suggest you step aside."

Without another word, the two men barged into the room, roughly knocking a frustrated D aside. "Excuse me, please, wait just a moment!" D exclaimed, hurrying in front of the intruders. "And what are the charges?"

"I have reason to believe you are running a drug and prostitution ring from your shop. And I intend to put a stop to it."

D reeled back, outraged. "I do nothing of the sort, Taizu, as I have explained many times before. This is an outrage!"

He turned to the other man and offered his most charming smile. "May I see the warrant, Detective," he glanced at the name tag pinned to the man's uniform, "Takahashi?"

Takahashi glanced at Rau Wu Fei, who nodded his consent. He then handed the document to the Count. He accepted it, his eyes gliding side to side as he read.

"Everything seems to be as it should be." He sighed. "Please, precede gentlemen. But you won't find anything to support your suspicions."

"We'll see about that."

THE END
