BREATHE DEEPLY
Damn it, I almost had him!
Panting, Leon raced down the busy street, the soles of his tennis shoes smacking against the crumbling cement. He jostled past a heavy-set vendor and a woman holding a tiny infant. The man yelled in a language Leon didn't understand but he kept running. He only had ears for the cadence of foot falls behind him. Way too fast to belong to anything human.
Risking a quick glace over his shoulder, Leon's eyes widened. The creature, a black cat-like creature the size of a tiger, came tearing through the crowd, attracting far less attention than the blond-haired, blue-eyed American was, much less than one would expect when watching someone being chased down a busy street by a vicious man-eater. To him, it was a tiger, but to everyone else it might be nothing more than an exotic looking young man with strange eyes.
Another one of D's goddamned tricks!
His lungs burned as he darted to the right, following a narrow alley stinking of the foulest stenches known to man - feces, garbage, and all manner of rotten foods. One foot slipped out from under him and he went sprawling, erasing the skin from his knees.
I saw D, damn it, Leon scrambled to his feet, ignoring the pain, 'Called to him from across the street! Hell, you think he'd be happy to see me. But no! That ungrateful bastard!
Truth be told, D's reaction to seeing him after so long had seemed less than friendly. His pale face growing paler still, his smile wiped away in an instant. His strange, alien eyes widened in shock. Ducking his head, he spoke a few words to the monstrous animal at his side. Then he was gone and the chase was on.
A quick left, another right and Leon found himself in a dead end. The alley was blocked by a large graffiti-infested brick wall. Cursing, he threw himself at the wall, but, unable to find a hand or toe hold on the slimy surface, he fell back to earth with an angry, wordless cry.
"D really doesn't want me to catch him, does he?" Leon snarled in disbelief, pulling his gun from its concealed holster and turning to face his pursuer. Even though it was an animal, he somehow knew that it could understand every word he said. "And you're here to, what? Protect him? From me?"
His last words shook with years of pent up emotions. D's sudden disappearing act had pissed him off, but this… his deliberate running away… that hurt more than Leon would care to admit. The animal roared at him defiantly, an awesome display of vicious teeth. Guess that answered his question. It crouched, muscles rippling in the dim light.
He drew in a deep shaky breath, then another, raised the weapon, stared down the sight…
"Well, that's too fucking bad." He yelled, 'Cause I'm not going to stop until I do."
The creature pounced.
…and Leon pulled the trigger.
THE END
