Keep Me Warm
When the sun rose over Hogwarts, painting the sky blood red as if to match the blood spilt that night, only then did Seamus allow himself to cry.
Bodies lay strewn about the grounds, and at a glance not a single person would be able to tell if they were muggle or wizard, pureblood or muggleborn.
They all bled the same colour, after all.
The Battle of Hogwarts had been long and gruesome, and Seamus had been left doubting his very existence. Why was he still alive, when so many were dead?
A hand settled upon his shoulder. Seamus twitched, grasping for his wand, until he looked up and met the gaze of a man he'd missed more than he'd realised was possible.
"Dean," he gasped.
Dean was streaked with dust and blood and dirt, and he towered over Seamus. He'd grown – of course he had – and was broader, stronger.
"Yeah mate," Dean said, and smirked. "You're still kicking about then?"
Seamus choked on an irreverent laugh.
"'Course I am, you bastard,"
They exchanged a long smile, and then Seamus yanked at Dean's arm, tugging him down to the dirt so that they could sit together.
"It's good to see you," Seamus admitted. He couldn't quite bring himself to look the other man in the eye. "I missed you."
"Yeah?" Dean said. "I missed you too. It was bloody cold out there, you know, hiding from Snatchers in the forests and a dingy, shitty, tiny tent."
"Cold?" Seamus said, and rubbed his hands together on reflex, as if to fend the weather away.
"Yeah, cold," Dean repeated. He nudged Seamus' knee with his own. "If you'd been there, you'd have been able to keep me warm. Wish you had."
It took a moment for Dean's worlds to sink in, but when they did Seamus jolted and turned to stare at him.
There was a hint of a smile on Dean's face, and a question in his eyes.
"Smooth talking bastard," Seamus eventually grumbled, but he shifted closer so that their bodies were pressed together, arms wrapped around one another.
The sky was blue, now, the sun burning bright. Seamus turned his face toward it, and found he was rather glad to be alive.
The war – finally – was over. He smiled.
