Mistress
Mendigo used to be a limber jack, a simple wooden puppet that Murial the witch used, however, she used a spell to animate him into a servant when she went to break Bahument free, and he'd been turned into a taller form, able to carry out orders. And orders carry, even after the one giving them was dead or trapped.
But then the fairies changed his allegiance to his new owner, the Fablehaven caretakers' granddaughter, Kendra. However they didn't simply change his allegiance, they changed his entire being. It wasn't necessary for Seth to say "Obey her!" when sending Mendigo back to Kendra after Mendigo gave Seth a lift the the four hills, Mendigo would have anyway. Because the fairies didn't change him physically, but mentally.
It wasn't as if Mendigo was suddenly like Hugo, with a mind and free will and all, but he was aware of – and consequently able to keep track of – everyone who gave him orders.
First and foremost, Kendra. Then the caretakers, Stan and Ruth, next Dan. Everyone else came after.
Whenever Kendra got in trouble and he was told only to obey the ones who weren't his Mistress. He obeyed, only because Kendra didn't give him any orders, if she had, he would have followed them, because she's the one his mind was turned to obey. Yes, Kendra had told him to obey Seth as if he was her, but he wasn't. His Owner came first, no matter what he was told.
He would obey her until the spell keeping him alive – in a not alive but not zombie form of the word – came unraveled or he was so broken not even the dragons could weave a spell to put him together again, or his allegiance was changed again, because she is Mendigo's Owner, and every one else comes second.
Hello. I would like to know what you think of this. I wrote 'Mistress' because I wanted a story focusing on Mendigo and Kendra, on how Mendigo's allegiance was turned to Kendra, and so he would probably obey her over anyone because of it. Any way, I enjoyed writing it, I hope you enjoy reading it, though it's very short.
