I wanted to try this, but I don't know if the best I've got... But I just love how Ester and Jack are together, kind of reminds me of him and Martha are together, even though Ester and Tosh are more alike. But I love their closeness.

Own Nothing.

One-shot:

Ester watched as Rex walked back into the apartment after they got back from the over-flow camps. She needed some air, she couldn't make herself walk into the apartment and face Jack with her face all dirty, tears still running down her face. She couldn't walk in and hear the good news that Gwen did in Wales or hear Rex telling her to suck it up again.

She took off her shoes and walked down the beach, she walked all the way to the water, her feet instantly cold from the water and it lapped on top of her feet. She was shaking as she stood there and looked out onto the ocean. She was scared, she had never come close to killing someone before. She heard Rex and some of the other officers tell stories to each other while she was making coffee about how they had to kill one person or another. But she never dared to dream to be like that.

She was smart, she was passive, she did not want to hurt anyone. But the feeling of strangling the man with her own body, the bruises on her neck when he tried to kill her still stung her skin. She could never face her sister, her niece and nephew knowing that she helped take a life.

She figured when she joined Jack Harkness, that with joining Torchwood, she would have to make decisions to save the planet. She just thought that the others would be the ones holding the gun, killing people, not her.

She looked up to see seagulls flying above her, she gave a small smile to the simple birds fly across the sky. She wiped away her tears when she felt Jack standing next to her, she could smell his cologne, his natural body odor he joked to her once. She felt him grab her hand and squeezing it, not saying anything.

"Are we monsters Jack?" She asked after ten minutes of just pure silence between them. She glanced at him from the corner of her eye, seeing him tense then relax.

"You're standing out here on the beach crying for a life of a man you didn't even know." Jack began. "I have made decisions to kill people, complete strangers because they were bad people. I never cried like you are doing now. Rex is holding up in his room because he cant stand the thought of losing someone he cared about, but he doesn't cry for the lives that were burned in the Modules. Gwen did everything she could to say her family, she blew up buildings." He turned to face her. "Gwen is not a monster. She has someone to fight for. And you Ester Drummed are certainly not a monster. A monster wouldn't cry because they had to make the decision to take a life."

He kissed her on her forehead. "Always remember to cry, the pain inside means you're human. That you still have a heart. This Miracle Day has to end. Torchwood will end it."

"Jack?" She asked as he held her in a hug. "What will happen to us when this is over?"

"I'm hoping that Gwen will go back to her family, live a normal life. Maybe Rex will live, find someone to love. You can back to your normal job, and I'll leave."

"What if..." She looked up at him. "What if I don't want to go back to my life. Can I go with you?" She stepped back and looked down. "I'm not asking for anything but friendship, but I don't think I can go back, I can only move forward and I want a place in Torchwood, if you'll have me?"

Jack chuckled. "Ester Drummed you are a beautiful, intelligent, hell of a woman. I think there's a space for you in Torchwood." He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and they watched the sunset. He kissed her on her head. "We'll fight the monsters together."
