Prompt: lac operons and beta galactosidase
Genetically Compatible
Sakura came to the decision that finals week was literally hell on earth. She clung desperately to the rapidly cooling latte in her hand as she trudged up the three flights of beige linoleum stairs to the library study area. Sakura had to hunch over to accommodate her heavy backpack as she ungracefully crawled up the stairs. Finally reaching the third floor, she pushed back the clear glass doors into the study area.
'Oh fantastic, this is just awesome' Sakura sarcastically thought to herself after a quick scan of the area.
Every single table, cubby, desk, and crack in the wall had been completely occupied by other students. The territorial markings of books and laptops were displayed for all to see that the precious desk space had already been claimed. Sakura angrily blew the bangs out of her face in a soundless display of irritation before she noticed that there was one seat left open.
'What the hell, it's better than nothing' resigned Sakura as her lips pulled down into something in-between a frown and a grimace.
So she plopped herself down into the less than comfortable chair as she took a deep breath of the air around her, thick with anxiety and stress. The sound of her unzipping backpack seemed deafening in the anxious silence of the study room. She furtively dragged out her heavy genetics textbook and turned to chapter fifteen regarding regulatory elements, also known as the bane of her existence.
'The Lac operon consists of three structural genes, Lac Z, Lac Y, and Lac A. Lac Z codes for Beta-galactosidase which is repressed by the lactose repressor, coded for by Lac I. Lac I is constitutive.'
Sakura furrowed her eyebrows in frustration as she squinted at the page. It almost felt like she was trying to read Swahili while drunk. On a whim, Sakura snuck a glance to look at the boy sharing her desk space. She absently mused that he was devastatingly attractive in the aloof sort of way. His tabbed political science textbook lay askew next to a uniform row of identical blue pens.
'Hm, smart guy, probably pre-law.' deduced Sakura in her head.
Suddenly a pair of pitch black eyes met her own apple green ones. The guy looked at her questioningly with a raised eyebrow and Sakura whipped her eyes back to settle on her textbook. She felt the blood rushing to her ears in embarrassment over being caught. In her own flustered state, she failed to catch the amused smirk that passed across the guy's features.
'The lac operon is essential in diauxic growth' Sakura read silently, trying to focus. She stared at the textbook with a renewed intensity, too mortified to lift her head.
'I wonder if he is single' Sakura sheepishly thought to herself. One thing was for certain though; she was coming back to this seat tomorrow.
