Kingdom of Death

Summary: Twilight Princess: Zelda looks over her fallen kingdom before meeting Link.

A/N: This is just an insight into Zelda's mind before Midna found Link. I hope you all like it and please read and review.

She looked out the window, looked out at Death. Her kingdom was gone, where once was the rich countryside dotted with bustling towns and small farming villages, all that remained was a land seeped in twilight. The towns were replaced with smoking ruins, the villages transformed to fortresses, black and foreboding, even the roads, which were at one point streams of travelers from merchants to mercenaries, were empty but for the horrid, deformed creatures that now had free rein of Hyrule. A curtain of darkness was smothering the world.

The decay of her kingdom, her home, was quick. The Dark King's poison did not take long to spread throughout the territory and blacken the lives of those whose lives it spared. As soon as the perpetual twilight descended upon them, the citizens of Hyrule were besieged by monsters that, up until then, had been the stuff of fairytales. They pillaged and destroyed and when they had taken over the countryside the only safe place left was behind the walls of Castle Town. People had flocked to the city as a haven from the carnage that had taken the land, and her heart still ached whenever the memory of those who had arrived only to find that the city's gates had closed resurfaced.

The Princess turned away from the window and surveyed her quarters, or rather her prison, her frustration causing tears to start welling up in her eyes. Outside, her people were suffering. Outside, her people were dying. Outside, those she was meant to protect had lost their hope. Outside, her people needed their ruler. And where was she? She was locked in a tower in her own castle, unable to do anything but watch how totally and completely she had failed in her most important duty.

Zelda forced her eyes back to the window. She would not give up though. Her last hope rode on the shoulders of the Twilight Princess. She had done what she could from the confines of her cell. Now she had only to wait. Wait for her redemption. Wait for her chance for vengeance.
