Derrick: My bare, dirty feet slapped the hard concrete, my footsteps echoing throughout the narrow breezeway. Moonlight sliced through the slim opening above me, teasing me. It was trying to trick me into doing what any normal person would be doing at 9:00 PM after two sleepless nights and days spent inventorying our stolen goods. Of course a normal person would be sleeping, but, also, a normal person wouldn't be stealing by night and counting money by day. Therefore, I am not normal. I'm just really good at pretending.

Cam: I looked into the pockets of my ratty jeans. They were filled. Derrick would be happy with me. I smiled, or at least I tried to. With all the sorrow in my life, it probably looked more like the ghost of a smile. I dug deeper in my pockets. I felt solid, smooth coins, the thin edges of a dollar bill, and something in a plastic bag. A sharp pain hit my finger. Pulling it out I saw a red drop of blood on my fingertip. I shook my hand and pulled out what had cut me. It was a thick, cream-colored envelope with embossed gold lettering, which spelled out the return address. Scratchy pen marks that wrote out the address contrasted the rest of the envelope. I turned it over, and promptly fainted.

Josh: Sitting in my regular perch, I had the perfect view of her. Long, thick black hair, swung around her waist, taunting me. Her light caramel-colored skin glowed in the setting sun. I couldn't see her eyes, but I imagined them a rich, beautiful chocolate brown. It was like her perfect looks we taunting me, begging me to go into the restaurant, and strike up a conversation. Right, like I could do that. If she wasn't throwing up at my clothes, what would I talk about? That crisp fifty-dollar bill I found in a purse? That guy I beat up last night to get his wallet, which turned out to be empty? Maybe she knew who I was. Maybe I was a movie star that had severe brain trauma then forget my life. Those were maybes. For sure, she didn't know who I was. Just as this thought flowed into my head, her beautiful hair caught a different light and she faced me. I could've been a mind trick, but I swear I saw her close one eye at me. A wink. She just winked at me.
