Prompt #02 - news; letter

Delivery

It was a quiet Sunday in Yuki's apartment complex.

This was actually a surprise, since usually Suzumiya Haruhi usually thought up something incredibly random on Sundays, since that was their only day off throughout the week. She supposed, as she sipped her freshly made tea, that Suzumiya Haruhi simply didn't feel like doing anything today.

Huh. That's a change in her behavior. Yuki made a mental note to report this to the Data Integration Thought Entity, as "Suzumiya Haruhi has slightly changed in her behavior…"

Something along the lines of that, she supposed.

Suddenly, a thought occurred to her. Perhaps Suzumiya Haruhi had sent out some kind of letter in the mail, like, "Meet on Sunday at noon"? Maybe Suzumiya Haruhi had stuck in her mailbox on a Sunday, although she knew very well the mail doesn't arrive on Sundays?

Well, if it was the case, then maybe Suzumiya Haruhi's behavior hadn't changed at all. There was no need for a report, then.

Nevertheless, despite the 50/50 chance of the scenario for it not happening or happening, she decided to go get her mail. But as she stood up to go to the door, a thought occurred to her.

Before the "Asakura Termination Incident" (as Yuki dubbed it), she herself never got what little mail that arrived in her mailbox. Instead, Asakura would religiously fetch Yuki's and hers mail every day.

So, this posed a slightly annoying problem for Yuki. How would she get her mail, when she had no idea where the mailboxes were?

As she pondered, there was a knock on her door.

"Nagato? It's me."

Yuki's heart skipped a beat, though she did not know why. Noiselessly, she walked toward and opened the door to find Kyon there with a bundle of papers.

"…Ah." Was the only thing she could say.

"Hey, Nagato," Kyon said, holding out the bundle. "Haruhi instructed me to come here to see you, 'cause you didn't show up. She was worried… I guess."

Yuki blinked.

"This is your mail," Kyon said, sounding a tiny bit bored. "I checked your mailbox, and it was full of stuff. There's also a note saying that Haruhi wanted us to meet this afternoon at 12."

Yuki held out her hands and slowly grasped the bundle and pulled it towards herself. There was a letter on top of the assorted magazines, with the words printed on it in big letters, "TO: NAGATO YUKI" on it.

"…Thank you." Yuki said. Somewhere deep inside her, something suddenly changed. Kyon… Suzumiya Haruhi's "Chosen Person", had just given her something. Never mind it was something as friendly as mail, but the whole thing of "gift giving" was suddenly brought to light.

He gave me something. He gave me... a present.

"I'll cherish it," she added quickly, hoping that was the right words to present her thanks. "Thank you... very, very much."

Unconsciously, she hugged the bundle of mail, a sudden soft expression crossing her face. It was only for a second, and Kyon most likely didn't see it, but it still was there.

Kyon's face turned a faint shade of pink, but said quickly, "A-all right, Nagato. I'll see you soon, or should I wait for you? Haruhi, Asahina-san and Koizumi are waiting, so…"

"It won't be necessary," Yuki dismissed. "I'll be there."

"A… all right. See you, then."

Kyon left, and Yuki closed the door, her back up against it. Suddenly, she slid to the bottom and kept hugging the bundle of assorted magazines and envelopes.

"A present…" she muttered quietly. "A present… for me."

Suddenly, Yuki realized she needed to preserve her gift before she lost it. Looking around, she found the perfect space: under the kotatsu (A/N: kotatsu heated table). Walking over to it, she shoved everything but the note under and hoped nobody would find it.

After all, it was her gift. Given from a very nice person.

A person that she hopefully wouldn't be leaving soon.
