A Profession Of Love: Skulduggery Pleasant

I can never be what she wants me to be. I can only offer her friendship, though my heart and soul beg for more. I can only stand by her side, when she wants me to hold her hand.

I dream, and wish. But dreaming and wishing is all I will ever do. Though we love each other dearly, she deserves more. She deserves a man of flesh and blood. Not me, a skeleton.

I have watched her grow from a child into a beautiful young woman. And if I had any breath to give, it would be taken away every time she entered the room.

A fellow mage once told me that we do not cherish things until we realize that they are beyond our grasp. It is now that I understand her words. And they break my heart.

My beloved Valkyrie. My little sidekick you are the essence of my life, in it's purest form. I would take you if I didn't have a heart. But I do. And for you, I will always have a heart.

I will guard you with my life my friend. No matter the cost, I will be there.

Skulduggery Pleasant laid down his pen, and closed his red leather journal, sadly. He had meant every word of what he had just written. And yet he knew he could never let her find out. If he had had eyes they would be wet with tears.

He stood from his desk, and went to the window. The night sky was a blanket of beautiful stars, but Skulduggery only saw her.

A sweet breeze rippled around the living skeleton, making him shiver. He held out his hands and the air pushed upward in an arc, forming the silhouette of a young woman.

He waved his hands again and the air sculpture formed details. It was Valkyrie's face. The face of an angel, in his eyes. Skulduggery stared at it for a moment before his hands dropped and his creation disappeared.

Lately it had been hard to hide his feelings for her. But he didn't have a choice. He had to remain strong. If not for his own sake, than for hers.

Skulduggery turned from the window, and walked over to his king sized bed. He had a big case to solve tomorrow, and he would need as much sleep as possible. He undressed and got into his bed. He felt the silky sheets surround him gently, but he imagined it was her.

He sighed, and turned off his lamp. He laid in silence, and pictured her smiling at him. She had the most dazzling smile. The way her one dimple on her left cheek winked at him. He smiled himself at the thought.

He looked at the ceiling, and tried to concentrate on the details of her face. It was how he put himself to sleep every night. And after what seemed like a lifetime. He stopped thinking, and fell asleep. But just before he did he whispered into the air. "I love you Valkyrie."
