Lying Close
They were both restless that night. They knew what was about to come to pass, and the change it would bring was unnerving. They fenced well into the night within Shuri's private quarters, until they collapsed onto the large bed, utterly exhausted.
They were lying closer than most sweaty men would be comfortable with, but the soft silk sheet and each other's presence calmed their previous anxieties.
"I met with Father yesterday."
"Hm." Shuri said noncommitably while running finger tips along Shido's bare arm.
"I've decided on Senju," the older man said carefully.
"I know."
Shido watched his best friend closely. He was varying the strokes now; elbow to bicep, knuckle to shoulder, wrist to elbow.
"She's well-bred, docile, polite, and loyal to you. She shall make a perfect wife."
"That speech sounds practiced," Shido chuckled.
Shuri looked away uncomfortably.
The silence lingered until they both drifted to sleep, content to just lie close. It was with unspoken agreement that they would never do so again.
