Something about her

He hadn't realised, when he gave her that small posy of flowers, that it would be the last time he'd see her for a long time. He had berated himself over and over again for giving her such a weak send off. Just longing looks and coded phrases over Glinda's head and then he'd just…left. He had been unable to express what he felt. To be honest he didn't really know what that was. He just knew that when he was with her there was something; something different, something he had never experienced before. Something wild, something scary, something right.

In her absence he fell back into old, reliable patterns. Glinda was so sure that they were destined to be together, so happy that all her dreams were coming true, and it was just easier to go along with. He didn't know anymore whether he was happy or unhappy. He had always been able to pretend the former, convince himself it was true, and then Elphaba had just called him out on it. Seen straight through him. He'd been playing pretend for so long he wasn't sure what was true. Except her. The only feeling he could hold on to now was that things felt wrong without her.

So he needed to find her.

"She doesn't want to be found!" Glinda had chastised him and he'd felt a dark, sucking hopelessness inside, even as he had plastered on a smile and told her that he'd marry her. One of them should be happy at least.

He danced around the ballroom with his bride-to-be, as carefree as he had that first day at Shiz, even as his chest felt heavy, and he wondered if this was what unhappiness felt like. That was before an alarm shattered the twinkling music and he was bursting into the Wizard's throne room and there she was.

"Fiyero!" Her hands were clutching a broom, ready to strike, but her voice held a sudden desperate joy and plea. Beautiful and fierce. Ready to defend herself. She had been wrong when she said she clashed with everything. Black suited her perfectly. The ridiculous hat that Glinda had given her as a joke finished the outfit, holding her hair up so her face was clear. Her eyes wide and passionate. If he attacked her now he wasn't sure that she wouldn't fight back and he understood why.

Everything about her cleared the confusion from his brain. Just by seeing her again he knew the path he was going to take, and the reason why he'd searched so hard for someone he had no intention of capturing. Until he had found her he couldn't go with her, and now, with startling clarity, he knew he was not going to let her leave alone.

"Fiyero. I thought you'd changed."

His heart felt light and a joy at finally finding her, being able to be with her, expanded until it filled his chest. It was new. It was right. He finally felt somewhere he belonged.

He smiled as he answered, "I have."
