Chapter 1: Who got the number of that gate?
Amidst a sea of darkness, a seven foot tall demon resembling a young man, possibly around his mid to late twenties, soon found himself regaining consciousness. It was only then that he remembered: Dimensional Gates hate him for some reason. Why these gates hated the one named Nelius Raoul, though, was another story.
Pushing himself up and off the ground, he had to take a moment to gather his bearings. From his lone right eye that peeked out of his dark brown hair, he gazed all around at his surroundings.
Judging from the surroundings, he'd apparently crashed into the side of a mountain, where a forest was growing into its side, and he could see the trail he'd inadvertently created upon crashing. His jacket and pants were scuffed up, but it wasn't anything a quick wash couldn't fix.
'Now where's my stuff?' Looking around, Nelius tried to find the double-headed axe he'd obtained during one of several excursions in a far-off Demon World. It was then that he noticed a faint glinting somewhere off to his right; sure enough, there it was, embedded halfway into a tree. Retrieving it, a hand went to the back of his belt, where an old gun he'd obtained before his initial mishap was holstered. 'Aw hell.' It was in terrible condition; his landing upon arrival had been a complete disaster, as most of its frame was cracked, and he held no doubt in his mind that the internal mechanisms were shot. 'First thing's first, I need to figure out where I landed. Repairing my stuff can wait.'
Hearing the sound of something rustling to his left, he spared a glance, only to see several arrows headed his way at an incredible speed. He dodged three of them, then brought a gauntlet-covered hand up to catch the fourth and fifth ones.
"All right, who's out there?" Discarding the arrows, Nelius grabbed the handle of his axe, waiting to see if his mystery attacker would show. From behind one of the trees' branches, where the arrows had originated from, his attacker had emerged.
It was a female, about eighteen inches shorter than himself. She had lime-green hair and eyes, and was clothed in what appeared to be large leaves and vines sewn together to act as clothing; namely a one-piece dress that exposed her shoulders and legs. One of her hands held her bow, and she was already reaching for another arrow from the quiver slung to her back. He would've thought her to be human, except for the pointed ears that stuck out a few inches from her head, indicating she had other origins.
'A demon? Nah, I can't even sense that kind of energy from her. What other kind of non-human has pointed ears?' He didn't have time to dwell on his question, as the woman had hers.
"What business do you have here?" She already had her arrow nocked, bow aimed right at him. From the tone of her voice, she sounded pissed.
"You're talking about that, aren't you?" He pointed behind himself, referring to the damage he'd made. "Call that a Dimensional Gate screwing me over."
'Dimensional Gate? What sorcery is he speaking of?' She wasn't sure what to make of this man. "Either way, leave here now. This is not a place for the likes of you, human."
"Fine, whatever. I got other shit to do." Turning around, he saw just how he'd made such a landing; had he taken another few steps forward, he'd walked right off the edge of a sheer vertical drop. "Oh, and notify your next of kin, I'm not a human." With that, he jumped off the edge.
Now freefalling toward the ground, he popped off a suitably stable outcropping of rock before allowing his wings to form up through his jacket and shirt. Unbeknownst to him, the woman from before had followed to watch him leave, slightly confused by his words.
'Wings? What manner of creature is he? He looks nothing like one of them...'
Now flying through the sky, Nelius had time to think on his current situation.
"OK, this place definitely doesn't feel like the Netherworld. It looks more like a place out of one of those fantasy novels my bunkmate used to read during his time off. Never could understand how he can stomach that kind of stuff." Shaking his head to remove the thoughts of back then, as well as keep the wooziness from the initial crash at bay, he continued. "Even so, there's something off about this world, yet I can't quite put my finger on it." Deciding to fly lower, since his aerial view was doing him no good, he barely skimmed the trees as he kept flying. However, getting lost in his thoughts was a bad idea, and going lower had been even worse.
From the canopy of green below him, dozens of arrows came flying up at him. One came dangerously close to his face, while a few others threatened to impale him in other areas. This was enough to get him to stop.
"Someone's gonna pay for that." He scanned the foliage below him, trying to find any signs of whomever it was that decided to use him for target practice. When another volley of arrows were launched at him, he decided enough was enough. Focusing magic into his right hand, he threw a torrential gust of wind at the volley, not only stopping them, but also violently shaking the trees, destroying the cover of the archers by blowing the leaves off.
'Huh? What the...' Standing within the branches were several more women, each one physically resembling the one he'd run into earlier, but there were noticible differences. For one, in comparison to the prior woman's green hair, theirs was a white, almost silvery color. The second difference was the clothing, or rather lack of it; from the short shorts that showed off a lot of their legs to the tops barely containing their assets. The biggest difference he noticed was the darkened skin they had; in comparison, the woman from before looked downright pale. 'Maybe an offshoot of whatever that woman from before was?' Again, he was given no time to comprehend this, as the women below decided on bringing him down with more arrows. He could hear one of them shouting something, but he was too far away to fully understand it, and besides, if they were trying to ventilate him, it couldn't be a sign of cooperation.
"Ok, this bullshit stops here." Throwing another wind blast their way, he watched as several tried to cling onto the trees to keep from being blown away. With magic charging in his left hand, he decided to try his hand at ice magic, despite the fact he wasn't too fond of cold temperatures. Combining the ice spell with the wind froze the immediate area, and he watched as his assailants were frozen solid. "That should hold them." Turning around to continue his flight, he hadn't noticed that one managed to shield herself with an anti-elemental field, and thus fired at his retreating form.
Feeling a pricking sensation in his lower left leg, he looked down to see an arrow embedded there. Ripping it out, he continued on, unaware that the arrow had been tipped in a paralytic solution until he felt his left leg starting to go numb.
'Fucking hell. Gotta get to safer ground.' As he felt his lower body starting to fall asleep, he quickly aimed himself at what appeared to have been a village of some kind. Feeling the numbness creeping up to his back, he immediately dove downward, wanting to be closer to the ground when he got ready to dismiss his wings. "Now!" Quickly dismissing his wings as they dispersed into his jacket, he mentally braced himself for a crash landing.
"This shit's going to hurt!" And hurt it did, as Nelius crashed into something as he blacked out for the second time.
Finding himself awakening once more, our demon immediately set upon scanning the area where he now was. Pulling himself into a sitting position, he took a look around.
'Looks like a small bedroom.' Indeed, he was sitting on a bed about a foot too short for someone of his size. The window to his immediate right showed that it was already night outside. Close to the open door sat his axe, and upon a small nightstand next to the axe were his gun holster and gauntlets. His trusted jacket was slung over a chair nearby. 'Question is, how'd I get here? Did someone pick me up?' Swinging his feet out of the bed, he stood up, satisfied that the paralytic solution that arrow had been tipped in had passed through his system. He began doing some quick stretches, making sure that the solution hadn't left behind anything nasty.
"Well well, good to see you up and about, though honestly you should still be resting." A male voice floated in through the door, snapping his attention to whomever was there. "Though after a crash like that, I thought you'd have been out for several days."
The man standing in the doorway was about a foot shorter than our demon was, clad in full armor that had some kind of enchantment upon it, from what he could sense. There was an blazing red insignia prominent on the armor, indicating that he belonged to some organization. At his side was a sword, most likely also enchanted.
"Where am I?" A hand went to his head, and he felt the numerous bandages crisscrossing through his hair.
"You're inside this town's Order outpost. Whatever it was that caused you to crash nearby left quite the impression."
"I'm certain. Then again, getting shot with some paralyzing solution doesn't quite leave one in full control of their actions."
"That explains the condition you were in when we found you. It's nothing short of a miracle that one of them didn't get to you before we did."
"Them?"
"The Mamono... Monster girls, as some call them. Nasty beasts, they are."
'Mamono? Monster Girls? What kind of world have I landed in?' Closing his lone eye, he tried to recall the events that landed him here. 'Geez, guess that crash really rattled my memory.'
"If you're still feeling unwell, you can rest here for the rest of the night." He then glanced to the axe by the door. "Though, judging from your weapon, I would imagine you're some kind of... adventurer?"
"If you're willing to get technical about it, I'm just trying to get from point A to point B. Whatever title I have is irrelevant." 'He said adventurer in a rather venomous tone. Something's up.'
"Still, you're going to need more than just that axe, and whatever that other weapon is, if you plan on heading out anytime soon."
"I've also had over twenty years of hand-to-hand combat experience. I also know some offensive and defensive magics."
"I see. Well, if you can, try to afford some armor. I'm certain you don't want another incident like before to happen."
"Duly noted. Well, unless there's anything else I need to know, I best get moving."
"And where, exactly, do you plan on going in that condition?"
'I best come up with a story. I'm normally not much of a liar, but what he doesn't know won't hurt.' He took a breath. "If anything, I'm a fast healer. As for where I'm headed, let's just say home, which is a fair distance from here. I was using flight to quickly travel there, when I felt my leg get hit with an arrow."
"Most likely a Dark Elf who shot at you. You're lucky to have made it this far before the paralysis fully kicked in."
"What, exactly, is the deal with these Dark Elves?"
"Any man they capture becomes one of their slaves, forced to copulate with them and be submissive to their every whim. There's been a particularly obnoxious bunch set up in the forests a few miles east of here."
"Explains why they shot at me. Thanks for plucking me out of wherever I landed, but I should be going soon. You could call it a family matter I have to attend to."
"Oh, I see."
With his gear in order, Nelius walked around town, getting a good view of what all could be offered here before he got moving.
'No doubt, this is definitely closer to some kind of fantasy world.' Even though the townsfolk were regarding him with strange stares, he chalked it up to his clothes, which definitely made him stand out. 'Regardless, I doubt anyone here knows of dimensional transfer. Maybe some information elsewhere would be a good start.' Seeing a noticeboard near the middle of the town, he decided to investiagate.
Dozens of small notices were posted, some looking for a lost pet or family member, others wanting to hire someone for work, but one that caught his attention was a warning about the outside monsters; how to identify them, what to do if one's nearby, and why it was important to inform the Order about any monster sightings. There was additional information posted about how to drive certain ones away, and which ones to immediately flee from.
'These things, these Mamono... they do sound like nasty pieces of work. Then again, I was taught to see both sides of the situation; never to make half-assed assumptions.' Little did he know how dangerous that line of thinking was around these parts. Finding nothing of interest, he headed for the outskirts of town, away from everyone else so they wouldn't see his abilities. 'Better safe than sorry.' Once he felt he had made it a safe enough distance from the town, he ran forward, hopping to one of the upper tree branches and clearing the canopy before he let his wings raise up from his back, then taking to the skies.
"Still, something doesn't quite make sense. Monsters somehow transformed into women? I've heard of housecats falling into the Netherworld and possibly becoming Nekomata demons, and even plants becoming Alraune, but nothing on this kind of scale. What kind of Overlord is encroaching on this place? I hope it's not another Fake Zenon incident." Passing by a small flock of birds, he continued on his thoughts. "Judging from how that Order guy sounded, these Mamono sound like a big problem. Then again, the same used to be said of several demons back home, but now they're more or less accepted. I need a testimony from the other side of the argument, but if what that notice said is any indication, I better keep it on the down low. Last thing I need is unwarranted attention."
Unbeknownst to Nelius, his flight had attracted some attention, as someone was scrying him.
'I thought I sensed an abnormal energy spike. There's something about this incubus that intrigues me, for him to be at the center of such a spike.' Whomever it was that was keeping such a close watch on him grinned. 'I can only wonder what else you are capable of.' Seeing something he hadn't, her grin intensified. "I suppose that will work as a first test."
Finding a small clearing far from any civilization, Nelius touched down, letting his wings retract back into his body.
'Better keep an eye out for any other people coming through here.' It was then that a sweet aroma floated past his nose. 'Huh? Smells like honey, and a rather large mass of it as well.' Indeed he was correct, as just a little ways ahead of him was gigantic bee's nest. 'Wait a minute, don't tell me I fell back into that other world? I thought it went up in-' A familiar droning sound cut his thoughts off, and he looked to the source of the sound.
Hovering about thirty feet away were about fifteen or so brown-haired women, being kept aloft by disproportionally small bee's wings. They all wore yellow tops with matching bikini-style bottoms, and had metal gauntlets and greaves. However, the most distressing two items upon them were as follows; first, they each held metal-tipped spears, and Nelius didn't need any second guesses on what those were for. Second, and perhaps the more important of the two, they each had that trademark stinger protruding out from their rear ends, and his prior experiences with the business ends of these was telling him not to mess around; one wrong move and he'd likely become akin to swiss cheese.
'OK, I know this isn't the Netherworld, probably not even Marjoly's old world, but what are bee people doing way out here, and out and about at this time at night?' With an excited buzz, the one presumed to be the leader of this hunting pack gave the command to swarm him. 'Fight now, think later!'
Three of the women dive-bombed him, and he jumped backwards to avoid two of them. The third had come in at a slightly higher angle, having bet on him dodging. However, she wasn't prepared for his next move; as she got ready to stab at him, Nelius went into a half-backflip as she skimmed over him. Now on his hands, he sprang forward, kicking both of his legs directly into her stomach. With the wind knocked out of her, he completed his backflip by using his feet to fling her into a tree. Back on his feet, he saw two more gunning for him.
'Try and overwhelm me with numbers? Lucky thing I'm used to working crowd control.' As one closed the distance and attempted to spear him, he dodged to his right and opened a hand, grabbing the wooden shaft of the spear and pulling his opponent closer, in order to deliver a Round Zidane Strike- a headbutt, in other words. Not missing a beat, he grabbed her by the arm and threw her into the other oncoming bee woman. Looking around for any others, he realized that they were gone from his sight, likely in hiding. 'Smart move, using the natural cover and lack of light. Still, I've got a few tricks left.' Going completely still, he closed his eye and began to concentrate, focusing on any immediate changes in his surroundings.
Unbeknownst to the hornets, he was building up for a powerful magic combination; like with the Dark Elves, he was charging up a strong Wind spell, and was going to combine it with a shot of Ice, to create a blizzard that'd stop them. He waited for one of them to make the first move.
With a silent command, the hornets, now surrounding him on all sides, and even from above, silently rushed out of their hiding places and began closing in on him...
Fifty feet... he still hadn't moved.
Forty feet... he was still.
Thirty feet... perhaps he'd given up.
Fifteen feet... this would perhaps be an easy mark?
Within spearing distance... spears raised, stingers at the ready...
His eye flashed open, and immediately an arctic chill surrounded him, catching the hornets off-guard and stunning them into silence as the ice began to coat them, rooting them to whatever spot they were at.
The scrying one nodded to herself, watching as he took care of the hornets.
'Well well, thinking ahead, using their own tactics against them... excellent. Specimens like you are few and far between out here. Though, how to bring you here...'
The ones in the air were quick to distance themselves from Nelius, waiting for his spell to end. However, when it passed with one last flurry of nearly weightless ice crystals, he had disappeared from sight. Frantically, they looked around, but he was well and truly gone. Gathering their frozen comrades, they slinked back to the hive, knowing that their Queen wasn't going to respond well to this news.
Meanwhile, about twenty yards away, Nelius had made his silent escape, having slipped away by lightly hovering above the ground, so his movement couldn't be tracked.
'Tenacious things, aren't they?' Already headed towards a new destination, he picked up the pace some as the low rumbling of thunder reached his ears. 'Damn, figures it'd storm on me. Better find a quick place to stop.' Looking around, he spotted an old shack sitting in the middle of the woods. ' That'll do. Hope whoever's in there is feeling hospitable.' Landing a few feet away from the house, he walked up, knocking on the door.
"Hello? Anyone here?" There was silence. He knocked again, only to accidentally opened the unlocked door. "A little too inviting, but I'll take it." Slipping inside, he couldn't help but notice how barebone the place was; aside from a fireplace, bed and table, there wasn't anything else. 'Guess it's one of those overnight places to crash. Still...' Checking outside to make sure he hadn't been tailed by any of the hornets, he quietly stepped out and headed for the nearest tree. Hovering up, he broke a fairly thick branch off, intending to use it as firewood. 'While I'm at it, better find some food, too.' Placing the branch beside the shack, he looked around, trying to find something, anything worth eating.
'That'll do.' Finding a fruit tree nearby, he reached up and grabbed at what he could.
"Not the most filling, but it'll tide me over." Tossing the last of the fruit's cores out the window, he listened as the thunder rumbled a lot closer. "Right on time." Closing and locking the window, he barred the door before tossing his jacket onto the table. 'Better try to get some rest.' He went to remove the bed's covers, but a foreign stench assaulted his nose, and he immediately tossed the covers back onto the bed. 'Ye gods, what is that horrid odor?'
He decided it to be a wiser idea to sleep on the floor. Using his jacket as a makeshift pillow, he unfurled his wings to use as a blanket as he drifted off. However, he never imagined that he'd be getting a surprise visitor, one who didn't need to bother with a door or window...
