I do not own any characters except the ones I made up. This is my first attempt at a fanfiction, so please be gentle with the bashing :P
Chapter 1
A sudden crash from outside made the two jump, momentarily frightened. Grumbling, Aberforth Dumbledore got up to open the door of his bar. Albus Dumbledore looked expectantly at the entrance, a hopeful expression appearing on his face.
A large man with big brown eyes and a shaggy beard entered the room behind Aberforth. He was carrying what appeared to be a bundle of dirty clothes.
"Hagrid...what news?" Asked Dumbledore.
Sniffing, Hagrid answered his question, speaking in tattered words.
"'Fraid...rumours...true...Rose alive...James and Lilly...gone..." he choked on his words, unable to say anymore.
Silent tears flooded Albus' bright blue eyes, as he sobbed for his loss. Aberforth walked up to his brother, placing a gruff hand on his shoulder. Albus looked up, seeing his pain being reflected in Aberforth's dry eyes. The two brothers shared a wordless moment of grief. Hagrid coughed uncomfortably, breaking the moment between the two brothers.
"Rose is 'ere Professor."
Suddenly remembering the forgotten child, the pair of talented siblings looked up. Albus extended his arms to Hagrid, who gently handed the child to him.
"Hello sweetheart." Whispered Albus to the sleeping baby. His eyes regained some of it's old sparkle at the sight of Rose. Aberforth touched Rose's cheek, sighing as he thought about the child's future. Albus caressed Rose's forehead, and was shocked to see a lightining shaped scar on her forehead.
"This scar...it could only be from Voldemort." Said Albus, more to himself than anyone else. He looked worried, as a flurry of thoughts bombarded his mind.
"It's just a scar Albus. Don't get paranoid." Grunted Aberforth.
Albus nodded his head, and smiling again, bent down to kiss Rose on her forehead.
"You're going to stay with us now..."He said.
Aberforth frowned at his brother, as he drew up a cot in the air with his wand. Immediately, the cot appeared, and fell on the ground with a prominent thud. Carefully, he placed Rose in the cot.
"You simply can't keep her with you. It's too dangerous!" Cried Aberforth, slamming his fist down loudly on the wooden table.
"She's our grand-daughter! If we don't take care of her, who will?" Demanded Albus, bewildered that Aberforth could even think about giving away their only living kin.
Aberforth's eyes flickered to his granddaughter's sleeping frame, and his expression softened. She was their kin, their only living relative. It would be wonderful to have her with them all the time...no...no...it wasn't right...it wasn't safe for her.
"Albus, please try to understand. You think I don't want to keep her as close to us as possible? But we can't Albus, we just can't." There was a little strain in Aberforth's voice, as he uttered those words. He looked at his brother, pleading through his big blue eyes, identical to Albus's.
"The only other living relatives she has are the Dursleys. And I don't want my grand-daughter to suffer with them." Said Albus firmly, lowering his gaze. It was difficult to win an argument with Aberforth's convincing stare.
"Don't you understand? Lily bound her blood to Rose with an attempt to protect her. We have no other choice. Rose will be in constant attack otherwise."
"We're Rose's blood as well. And surely, we can protect her here, with the best witches and wizards just a few minutes away..." Said Albus, desperately trying to convince both him and Aberforth.
"Albus...Lilly was not biologically our family. She was not from the same family as us. Yes, we loved her as a daughter, but she was from a different family. Her blood tie would relate only, and only to Petunia Dursley."
At Albus's lack of words, Aberforth was encouraged to speak a little more.
"We're doing this for her safety Albus. There is no other way, and you know it."
Albus stared at Aberforth, and finally, his mind was cleared of all emotional, irrational thoughts. Yes, Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, Order of Merlin, First Class, Destoryer of Dark Wizard Grindelwald had been blinded by emotion. Albus sighed heavily in defeat, dropping his head in his hands. Aberforth got up, placing a hand on Albus's shoulder.
"I'm sorry Albus. I know it's difficult."
Albus swallowed up the tears, saving them for another time. He was Albus Dumbledore. The man with the many talents and reputed fame. He was also the grandfather of the girl-who-lived. And the grandfather of the girl-who-lived could not afford to be emotional and irrational.
