My Fair Queen

Kagome x Jareth

Ch. 1 – The Set-Up

He sighed again as he sat in his chair. Jareth couldn't believe that Sarah had rejected him yet again. He was the Goblin King! She should've begged him to have her. But all she did was complain about things "not being fair" in her life and ignored everything he sent. He just couldn't take the heartache anymore. He tried pretending she didn't exist. There was no response from her these past 6 months. He hadn't been to the human world in what felt like forever. The goblins were getting antsy. One reminded him the other day that Halloween was approaching. It was the one day he brought everyone living in the underground to the human world to have fun at their leisure. It was the one day a year they could run around and blend in. But Jareth couldn't feel excited about it. The human world… it just felt like a huge disappointment.

"Haaaaaaalloooooooweeeeeeen~" He heard Ludo howl out.

Damn. While he sat in his chair and tried to think of how to get out of going to the human world for the holiday time had passed by fast. He could send them on their own… but he'd have to be with them to bring them all aboveground since there were so many. Perhaps he could just drop them off and then pick them up later… but time could pass by and they could be stuck there if he found something to amuse himself while they were gone. There was really no way out of not spending the whole time in the human world for the festivities.

"Oh King! Everyone hath gathered for the celebrations and await you in the hall." Sir Didymus spoke to him gently, trying not to intrude on whatever Jareth was doing.

"Very well. Let us go to the human world so we may get this over with. Someone bring my the list!" Not a moment later Hoggle ran in with a rolled up parchment.

"Uh… here is your list… my King."

"Let's see where we're going this year… ah…. Japan. Yes, we haven't been there in a long time. It definitely won't be a place Sarah would go to for Halloween. Time to leave." And with a big, dramatic wave of his arm they all vanished from the underground.

` Kagome sighed as she sat in the Goshinboku. She had just finished hanging bat lights in the branches as the last decoration touches to the shrine. It had been a long time since she had returned from the past. She had fulfilled her duty and pieced the Shikon No Tama back together. She had learned a lot from her friends over the years she spent traveling around feudal Japan. Sango taught her combat techniques, Miroku taught her about ofudas and different chants, Kaede taught her how to make subjugation beads and the chants for them, Shippo taught her some kitsune tricks… and Sesshomaru, who had become a strong ally in the later years, had taught her how to channel her miko ki into various objects which included weaponry which allowed her to learn how to create a bow and arrow out of miko ki alone. Inuyasha wasn't as helpful. He always needed to be the stronger one and wouldn't let her do much if he could help it. It had become suffocating and by the end she wasn't surprised that he chose Kikyo over her. She had given up a while ago and just became disappointed. The hurt came when he attacked her for the Shikon because she wouldn't bring his dead lover back to life. She couldn't bring herself to attack him back, so she had several scars from him. When she returned home for good, she found herself lonely. Her family had all moved on, though they would still visit and keep in touch. She even visited them a few times, but they would not return to the shrine. They left it completely in her care. She had forcefully been separated from her second family in the feudal era by time and didn't have the heart to leave the fateful old tree to someone else. This tree had seen her through so much and held so many memories. It was her only living connection to her dual life. But tonight she there was going to be a party at the shrine, adult-only, so maybe she'd meet someone. She didn't hold much hope, but she was at least going to have fun. Souta had invited a ton of people from his college so the place would be packed. She still couldn't believe that he was in college, she had missed so much of his life… but at least he hadn't changed much.

"Sis!" A voice broke into her thoughts and she looked down to see her younger brother waving to her from below the Goshinboku. "The decorations look amazing! I brought a couple friends to help set up tables and the drink table. Have you picked an outfit yet?"

"No… I could just wear this…" Kagome gestured to her miko garb.

"That's boring! You wear that for the shrine all the time! I got a lot of single guys coming! You gotta dress up! Get your butt in the house so we can go through your closet and figure out if we need to go shopping!"

Kagome sighed as she jumped down from the high branch she was on, landing lightly on her feet despite the distance. Souta just rolled his eyes at her and called her a show-off before grabbing her arm and dragging her into the house. She looked up so see him with a smirk full of confidence and smugness while his eyes glittered with mischievous intent as he tugged her up the stairs, hopefully she'd survive to see that party.
