DELUXE ACCOMMODATIONS

By: Vanessa Sgroi

Dean tried the first match, cursing when it didn't light. He tried a second and a third, silent begging for one to work, then tossed them aside next to the spent lighter with another curse. It was no use; the matches were too damp to work. There'd be no fire to help them pass this night in the forest.

He hobbled over to Sam's side, muttering, "Looks like we're in for a long night, Sammy." Seeing as Sam had passed out long ago, there was no answer to Dean's grim observation.

Thunder rumbled overhead, spurring Dean into action. He slowly gathered some sticks and leaf-covered branches fashioning a rudimentary lean-to over Sam. It was just wide enough to cover the two of them. By the time he was done, Dean was coated in sweat causing his still-damp clothing to cling even more uncomfortably.

Crawling into the lean-to, Dean checked Sam's wounds again then covered him with every article of clothing he could snatch from their duffel bags in the hopes of keeping him somewhat warm overnight. He stretched out next to Sam, groaning as his own injured leg protested. The wound on his side also throbbed in time with his leg. In the dim light of a dying flashlight, he clumsily swapped the old bandage, damp with blood and sweat, for a new one.

"Okay, Sammy, you can wake up anytime now." He cringed when another clap of thunder boomed overhead. The wind picked up as the storm threatened to let loose. "You can wake up 'cause I'd rather not be miserable alone."

He smiled when Sam twitched next to him. "That's it, little brother."

"Dee?"

"Right here. How do you like our deluxe accommodations?"

"Mmm. Decorations are k-kinda nice b-but the bed's a little hard."
