Disclaimers: I don't own any of the characters or concepts of Smallville or
X-Men, I'm just borrowing them for awhile.
Category: Clark/Chloe Romance. Alternate Universe. Crossover
Spoilers: None that I really know of.
Author's Note: I've been working on the latest addition to Just a Girl but
this conversation popped into my head and wouldn't let go. It doesn't fit
with the story, possibly into a sequel, but I thought I'd put it out here as
a thank you for everyone's patience.
So, Thank you! Your wonderful comments and support have been invaluable to me
and I hope you enjoy this!

"Clark?"
Chloe Sullivan's soft voice surprised him and Clark turned with a smile.
"Hey!"
She didn't resist when he tugged her forward into an embrace, instead, she
rested her cheek against his chest and closed her eyes tightly in an attempt
to block out everything but the sound of his heart beating beneath her ear.
"What's wrong?" He asked almost immediately. Even though their relationship
had only recently taken a romantic turn, he had always been able to 'read'
her with some accuracy and it didn't take super powers to tell him she was
upset about something.
"Not yet." She murmured reluctantly, still refusing to open her eyes.
"Okay." Clark replied automatically, not complaining in the slightest about
her sudden need to be close. The new facet of their relationship was still
taking some getting used to but in a good way. The feelings he got from holding
Chloe like this were still new and wonderful and he relished every chance he
got to experience them; so he had absolutely no problems with forgetting
about anything that didn't have to do with how good she smelled or how
perfectly she fit in his arms.
The two teens didn't move for a long time until, finally, Chloe lifted her
head from his chest and looked up at him. "How do you do it?" She questioned
finally.
"Do what?" He asked, despite having a good idea of what she was talking about.
"Act like everything's normal, like you have no big secret that governs every
aspect of your life?" She pulled away and paced for a minute, feeling his
gaze on her but not having the strength to meet it. "I..." She sighed and
dropped down on the couch. "I hate this."
Sitting down next to her, Clark pulled her close again, resting his cheek on
her hair. "It's not easy. I hate it too." He sighed. "I hate not knowing what's
next, or where I'm from, why I'm here, what happened to my parents, I hate not
being able to tell people, not being like everyone else." The confession was
made in a quiet, calm voice but she knew how much it hurt to say it and she
instinctively cuddled closer, trying to return some of the comfort he was
offering her.
The attempt touched him and he shifted to kiss her forehead. "I'm glad you
know."
She looked up through her bangs and smiled. "You are?"
"Mmhmm..." He instinctively returned the smile. "I mean, Mom and Dad are
great. I know I wouldn't have gotten this far without them but you knowing
is different." He didn't know how to describe it but the look in her eyes
said Chloe understood what he was trying to say loud and clear. "It's just...
different."
"I know." She agreed. "I mean, my Dad knows about me, and everyone back in
Westchester but..." Her hair brushed against his chin as she shook her head.
"You...it's different. Like, even with the support I had from everyone, I
still felt alone...I don't now."
That was it in a nutshell. Even with his parents supporting him, he'd been
alone.
He wasn't now.
