When he wanted to Shorty had a strong grip. it probably came from all those years on the street. it was only going to be a week, two at the most. But of course just like with every other thing he didnt want to do he was being stubborn. He had yet to let go of Indiana's arms. And his plane left in an half hour and it took him atleast 15 minutes to get to the airport.
he didnt want to leave the kid, but where he was going was japan. and the people still had some prejudice for chinese people and that included Short Round. So of course for shortys safety and other japanese kids, shorty still had a painful spot when it came to japs as well, that was proven a couple months ago when him and a japanese boy had gotten in a fight but thats a story for another time.
Shorty wasnt making this easy for him. he looked like was on the verge of tears.
"please indy i promise be careful, no fight"
"im sorry kiddo i wish i could say yes but i dont want to risk it. now i really have to go. i love you and i will call as soon as i get there i promise."
indiana was able to slip his wrists from shortys grip and kissed him on the head. he turned and ran. he could hear shorty cry out his name one last time before he shut the car door and the taxi drove off.
Willie had noticed the next day that Shorty had changed. He went out for hours and when he came back he wouldnt talk to her he would just go straight up to his room. He got quiet and didnt joke around as much.
she thought it would pass over, like maybe he was just still a little upset Indy had left him. but a week had passed and there was still no change. she thought maybe she would try to talk to him. so when he came home one day and tried to run up stairs she grabbed his wrist and pulled him into the living room, sitting on the couch.
"what you want?" his accent was still pretty thick, so he still used broken english.
"i just wanted to talk to you, i mean you come home and never say a word, just run up stairs. is everything ok?"
he spun around and spoke so meanly it startled her.
"MAYBE i dont want talk to you, you think that? AND maybe everything not ok, maybe i scared that someone beat up indy cause they find out he have me as kid. he go to japan and japan hate me. i just dont want him to die or something bad happen and i end up all alone"
Willie had been startled. Shorty never talked like that. she had heard the door open and close while he was screaming at her. thats when she remembered. it had been about a week, that meant Indiana was back.
"shorty its ok. im fine. your not going to be alone i promised i would come back didnt I?"
short round spun around at the sound of the familier voice. "INDY" he shouted as he ran to meet the professor who had his arms open waiting for a hug. Shorty ran into his arms and he picked him up like a small child and hugged him back.
"thanks willie you know for watching him. sorry if he caused any problems."
"oh not at all. it was a pleasure. anytime."
Indiana looked at the kid he held in his arms
"what do ya say, ready to go home squirt?"
what he got was a nod of the head and a huge smile. yep he knew why he adopted the kid.
