I walk through the doors with my teenage daughter and preteen son following me to see a letter on the table. I quickly walk over there and pick it up to find a large red stamp saying URGENT, with no return address. I tell my kids to go make their lunch as I cautiously open up the letter.
Dear Katniss Everdeen Mellark,
I'm sorry. I don't know what else to say besides that. I know you never forgave me and I know that he was always your choice. He always the one you couldn't survive without. The only thing I had going for me was keeping your family safe, but look how that turned out.
Rory left us when he found out it was my bomb. I still have no idea where he is, but he used to send Mother money, at least once a month. Of course there was never a return address, but I always hoped. I forgot where hope landed me before. Mother died a couple months ago and Posy got married. I don't know what happed to Vick; he just said he couldn't take it anymore and set off North. I think he died because they found some bones a few months later. I still have nightmares. I saw a picture of you in the paper; you looked so happy and I realized…..that I deserved to die. I'm miserable here in Two and…I'm sorry. A couple of days later, I turn on the TV wondering what Gale was talking about in his letter, feeling incredibly worried. After about 20 minutes, an urgent news report came on; Gale's body was found burnt in his fire place. A letter was found at the scene of the crime, saying,
