Zuko might not look it now, but he was a hopeless romantic before he had been scarred.
Every night, he would steal scrolls and poems from the royal library, all romantic, and stay up late, reading them in his room. One of his favorite pastimes was imagining what the girl he would marry was like. He had her all planned out...
Her skin would be pale, without blemishes, and her eyes would be alive and almond shaped, just like his. Her hair would be long and silken, thick and ebony, as smooth as her cherry red lips. She would even have a distinct smell – a mixture of roses and some other sweet-smelling flower he didn't know, but would recognize when he found it.
And probably most importantly, she would be soft spoken, always willing to do what her husband told her to.
In other words, perfect.
And so unlike the waterbender.
Oh, sure, her eyes were alive enough, but blue? And they were so big and different from his. Her skin was tan, and riddled with small marks and scars, giving testimony that she was required to work in her life. Her lips were small and pink, chapped from traveling. Her hair, though long, was wavy and often tangled or greasy from lack of care. She smelled like no flower – unless there was a flower that smelled like sweat and dirt and big fluffy monsters.
And soft spoken? The girl could wake the dead! You could bet your life she would never listen to what her husband told her to do, either.
In other words, Zuko thought as he leaned down for another kiss from the water tribe girl, perfect.
A/N – This was inspired by the fact that I am ruthlessly realistic when I feel like it. But then I realized that even thought she might not smell like a basket of roses, Zuko can still love her. Fluff followed this realization, making me get my special fanfiction-notebook off my bedside table at 2 in the morning and write it down. Darn plot bunnies. Always rape me in my sleep. And this is the first story they've let me finish in a LONG time.
