Prologue
Bella sighed as she looked at the enclosed letter in her hand, she was sending it to her friend in a different pack. Ever since the storm things have changed, her life, her body, her everyday was now dangerous every breath could mean a different life direction. Thinking of the words she sent her friend she dropped the envelope into the post box. Barely sparing a glance she turned and walked away. Wrapping her cardigan around her to fight the cold. Being a wolf shifter, she was not used to being cold, it was just another one of those changes, and a particularly dangerous one.
Jacob,
Since the storm there have been many dangerous changes that I need to speak to your elders about.
My painting have changed, they have started to predict future events and it scares me. I have painted La Push, my alpha is eager to be rid of me. The vile man can't cope with the events that are proceeding. Its happening to all wolves in every pack everywhere! You are our closest pack so I will start with you.
My alpha has decided that I need more control, and your pack are famous for their control. The vile man hates me, always has and has decided to send me away, Gabriel is likely to follow. As a friend I hope to join another pack. Yours.
Bella Swan.
Thinking on the letter Bella realised she probably gave too much away, especially if it were ever intercepted. Her tribal council were sending her away, her alpha hated her, her pack members hated her. the thing was, she and her twin were not full wolf. They were half wolf and half witch. Their father the witch their mother the wolf. Her father was from a highly respected bloodline and the witch in her disgusted her pack. She hated them, they hated her. Since her first shift and her mother's death Bella spent most of her time in her fur. However, this has brought problems as well. Bella was beautiful, she used to have tanned skin and long ebony hair like most of her tribe and pack but since the storm her body and her shift was different. Looking in her mirror she looked at her pale skin, her blue eyes and her long black hair. She had none of the freckles she used to have, her scars from the previous fights with coyotes were more visible. They were deep red and purple. Shifters were meant to heal, and they had. They just hadn't been visible on her old skin.
Staring at her boarding pass, she growled under her breath. Bella hated flying, she preferred running, on the ground. Feeling the wind through her fur. She had no choice, her pack refused her and sent her away. Bella hated people because of this, and in turn hated big crowds. Bella wanted to just get to the pack give her warning and go back to the woods. Nothing more. Having mainly been a wolf since she was nine, she was always on alert and looking for predators and potential threats. Scanning the crowd, she had to push her wolf down as she tried to catalogue every scent which was overwhelming her nose. She knew Jacob and Billy well, as they knew her adoptive father Charlie was okay with her going to them. Billy planned to watch her all day every day, Bella had no intention of that happening. She had a small cabin in the woods all she had to do was unpack, a car and some other bits were soon to be delivered.
Bella frowned when an older woman drenched in the scent of urine sat next to her, Bella shifted through her scent and determined she owned about ten different breeds of cat at home. Bella shifted to cover her nose, not wanting to breath through her nose in case she could taste it, Bella scented that the woman was probably just as scared of flying as she was. Bella placed some large headphones over her ears to try and drown out the noise, the captain soon announced take off. Bella gripped the hand rest, the older lady next to her scowled at Bella as she scrunched her face.
"I really don't like flying" she nodded and turned away. The flight attendant looked at Bella and tried to smile. Bella shook her head and shut the window. She turned her music up and clenched her eyes closed as she felt the plane move. The kind attendant, shook Bella's arm to get her attention, Bella slowly opened one eye to peak at her.
"Would you like some sleeping pills?" she asked, kindly. Bella nodded eagerly, the attendant quickly had her pills and some water.
"My husband is the pilot, he's the best there is" She encouraged. Human pills would not work with Bella, but she knew they would take the edge off. As a wolf, Bella has a higher tolerance for that stuff. It wasn't actually that long after that Bella did drift off into sleep.
Bella paused as she walked into unfamiliar woods, breathing in deeply she recognised the smell of small rodents and pine wood. This wood was green, greener than any she had ever seen. This area of the country saw a lot of rain, this was beneficial to the forest. Bella's wolf loved running in the rain, quicker than any wolf in her pack she shifted and she lifted her wolf head. Feeling the rain soak through her fur. She hadn't been running long when she heard another set of heavy footfalls. This could only be another wolf. Thinking it was Jake she paused, the footsteps changed direction and headed for her, the pitch black wolf didn't stop its advance on her, Bella faltered, it was the biggest wolf she had ever seen. None of the wolves in her home pack had ever grown this big. The wolf charged her and leapt into the air, his paws scraped against her shoulders and she fell, as she tried to fight him off he opened his jaw and bit down on her neck.
Bella woke abruptly when the attendant started to shake her arm. Bella stretched and handed her the blanket back and smiled. The smelly old lady next to her had long disappeared giving Bella's nose a break. She felt her wolf pacing inside her, never have been this long without shifting.
"Just as I promised, no crashing" The attendant grinned, Bella also handed her an empty glass.
"Promise you'll give your husband my deepest thanks" Bella said as she stood to leave. Bella quickly ducked into the ladies' room and pulled her denim jacket around her waist. Her friend from her witch side liked to dress her up. She said she needed to make an impression on her new coven. Bella rolled her eyes in the mirror, when did she ever need to wear such a short dress? Tying her jacket around her waist it at least hid the length from behind. Looking at her reflection, it was familiar but different. Her own reflection disgusted her, turning she splashed cold water onto her face. Bella left the room feeling tired, sighing when she felt eyes on her she glanced over her shoulder. She stumbled at what she saw. Stood by arrivals was the tallest, broadest possibly the sexiest man she has ever seen. She knew this man was a wolf before she even scented him, he had ebony slightly curly hair that danced around his ears. He had a lean muscular body and the tanned skin of their ancestors. Bella felt an instant attraction to the man, frowning that had never happened before. Taking a deep breath in, there were too many humans in a close vicinity so she couldn't catch his scent. This was good, meant he couldn't catch hers either. She appraised him from his feet and nearly dribbled at his low fitting jeans, she scanned over his tight fitting tee which showcased everything in the most flattering way, the leather jacket over the top added a certain deliciousness, reaching his face again their eyes connected.
Gasping as many different cords reached out from Bella to the wolf, her previous thoughts shifted and changed and everything was focused on this man. She frowned. What the hell just happened? Her body faltered and she took one step toward him. Pushing her hussy of a wolf down, she fought the howling bitch and practically ran away from him. Glancing back she saw coloured ribbons reach out and curl around him, she felt this yearning to turn and run to him, something buzzed in her ear in distaste that she turned from him. Bella fought to keep the surprise off her face when her body fought her to turn to him. Hiding behind a column she realised something.
That must have been a fucking imprint.
…...
Sam watched as a woman stepped out of the ladies room, the dress she was wearing was a knock out, skin tight and white. She had a denim jacket wrapped around her waist. He smiled silently, she did not want to be wearing that. The woman had long black hair it was kind of wavy and reached her waist, her long pale legs looked divine and when she took a step, he noticed she was athletic she looked strong. Strangely it was a turn on, as she still passed as feminine. Sam desperately wanted to approach her but he was waiting on a wolf from another pack. This woman did look familiar to him, he couldn't place her face. He thought it was ridiculous, someone as beautiful as her he wouldn't forget her face. She seemed small enough to only reach mid chest height. Feeling Sam's stare on her she looked over her shoulder. The man gasped.
Seeing her face was just as beautiful as her body. He watched as she evaluated him, her delicate posture and the smirk on her face showed confidence and mischief. Even from the distance he was from her he could see her high cheekbones and he desperately wanted to know the colour of her eyes. He took a deep breath in trying to discern her scent. There were just too many humans around for a distinctive scent however. As soon as she looked up from his full body evaluation, he felt lost. She had stunning blue eyes, even from his place he could see the contrast to her skin, he gasped when he felt strong cables and cords reach from his body and soul toward hers. He saw humans walk through the green and blue ribbons that wrapped around her and tied and connected him to her forever. He felt everything inside him shift and focus on her. Sam felt everything he had ever felt for anyone else fade away and disappear. He watched her smile as she stepped toward him, she seemed to shake herself then practically run away. He chuckled silently. He so wanted to chase her. he paused as he started to feel an ache in his chest. What the fuck?
He shivered, Jesus did he just fucking imprint?
Who the fuck was she?
Understanding that if he let her run now, he might never know who she was. He was not going to become crazy because he never knew his imprint. The elders would understand why he left the new wolf when he told them he was running after his imprint. Running to the door she disappeared out of he looked around frantically, again taking a deep breath in. he caught a scent of apples and honey blossom. The scent was delicious to him, half wolf half something else. He chased it into the forest hoping it was his imprint. Maybe she was the wolf he was meant to pick up after all. She looked nothing like the pictures Jake had showed him however. Jacob would understand, considering he had imprinted on Emily not long after he had shifted into a wolf. Sam quickly shifted and followed the scent. Hoping the rain wouldn't wash too much away.
…...
As Bella ran, she had to keep correcting her course, her body kept turning her around. All she could think about was him, thinking what he could possibly smell like, his mocha eyes were haunting her as she tried to think of something else. She felt the bond stretch as she put distance between them, she felt its anger at the distance. She knew he goddess created imprints for a reason, but she was set on not having one, her independence was everything to her. the rain was starting to freeze her skin more than usual, frowning as a wolf she quickened her pace hoping the exercise would warm her.
Not long after Bella had increased her pace did, she hear another set of footfalls. She paused, she heard them change direction and head straight for her. her wolf was surprised when she saw the biggest black wolf, she had ever seen charging straight for her, she had a weird sense of Déjà vu. As The wolf lunged for her, Bella was prepared for the move, she maneuvered her paws underneath him and used her back legs to push him over her head and into a tree. Before he could even stand, she shifted.
"Is that really how you lot greet your guests?" Bella asked the wolf. In her human form the cold was even more extreme, she felt her bones shiver. She stood there in the silly flimsy white dress, she was drenched through in seconds, stepping toward him quickly. "Fuck I'm cold!" she whispered as her vison went blurry as she looked at the wolf shift forms. Sam rushed forward as she collapsed, he caught her and frowned as he looked down at her. She was colder than a shifter should be.
…...
Sam was hoping either Paul or Jake were heading his way, he knew they would have felt him imprint. He picked Bella up, he knew he had to get her home and warm. He hissed as her freezing face touched his overheated skin. Placing her hands around his neck he started to run her toward La Push. He needed to speak to the elders. Neither Jake nor Embry described their imprinting's like anything that happened to him. She was covered in mud, he paused and pulled her jacket from her waist and manipulated her arms into the sleeves, fighting an unresponsive person back into his arms once she had the jacket on was harder than you'd think. Sam was aware that the cold could be fatal on shifters, who usually ran hotter, she was warming where she was touching him but not by much. He scented her and found her getting weaker and weaker. The rain was falling heavier and colder, Sam kept to the trees, until he saw a police cruiser.
"Sam!" A voice called, Sam looked over and saw a younger officer called Seth in the drivers seat. "Don't tell me you are dragging her off to be buried in the woods are ya?" he asked jokingly. Seth chuckled, Sam ran to him.
"Look, she's my girlfriend, we went for a hike and she fell, she's gotten really cold I need to get her home and warm" Seth nodded, pointed to the back and turned the heat up loads. Sam had an inkling that Seth was soon to be a part of the pack. Sam held her to him as he rubbed her arm for friction, trying to warm her up. He stroked her face.
"Is she going to be okay?" Seth asked him.
"I hope so," Sam whispered. Her eyes were moving underneath her eyelids. Sam sighed, and started rubbing my boiling hands on her ice-cold arms.
"How long have you been together?" Seth asked, Sam looked up at him; and smiled sheepishly. "does she know?" he asked, racing towards Jakes with the lights on. Sam was confused as he still tried to create friction on her arms to warm her up.
"what's that?" Sam asked. He laughed as he parked.
"that you love her?" Sam frowned as Jacob wheeled Billy onto their porch. Sam threw open the car door. He was exhausted he had ran her most of the way and as fast as he could. His arms were protesting every movement. Nevertheless he picked her up, and swung around to face Jacob.
"You imprinted?" Billy asked after checking that Seth wasn't overhearing. Sam nodded and carried the perfect stranger into Billy's house.
"Is that Bella? She looks different" Jacob called. Sam kept walking as Seth came in too.
"We have to get her warm Jake, she was in the woods in this ridiculous white dress. It wasn't enough to keep her warm." Jake stood there, dumbfounded that his friend was passed out. "Come on help me," Sam demanded and threw a blanket at him. "Idiot" Sam quickly had her wrapped up and was hugging her to try and keep body heat constant for her. She was starting to get slight colour back in her cheeks.
"Shouldn't we get her to the hospital?" Seth asked but Sam shook his head. Billy started to talk to him and usher him out. "I'll come round tomorrow to see if everything's alright" Seth called. He was a good kid.
"who was it?" Jacob asked, suspiciously. Sam looked up at him questioningly, and stopped his warming minutely. "who did you imprint on?" Sam sighed, that one movement and he could tell his alpha was exhausted.
"I saw Bella in the airport. She walked straight past me, I assumed she was not your friend. I soon left realising everyone from her flight had already left so I did too. Heading for the forest to scout. I saw this white wolf, and charged thinking it was some dumb wolf near our land. She shifted into her human form, as soon as I made eye contact with her in the airport that's when it happened" Sam said in awe as he looked down at the woman in his arms. "She said she was cold and started to collapse I caught her. In the airport I saw these thread type things weaving around the both of us and knot us together." Sam explained. Billy was in deep thought. The alpha looked up at Jacob. "I'm sorry mate, I know she's your friend but I can't help it and you know that" he did, as he had imprinted on Emily. He nodded and he too hugged Bella on her other side. Billy then spoke up.
"you saw threads?" he asked. Sam nodded. "Hmmm, Jake what was it like when you imprinted?" he asked. Sam looked over Bella's head at him, then looked down at Bella, she seemed so delicate but she was so beautiful.
"Like the focus of my whole universe, shifted and she was all I could see" Jacob sighed thinking of Emily.
"Well that happened, but it was like two sets of threads from each of us reached out and knotted us together, I mean there were people in-between us, they were just walking through the treads. I couldn't see anything other than her." Sam explained. Billy nodded and said something about going to talk to the elders.
"I know you man, but if you ever hurt her. It won't stop me from killing you myself" Jacob said. Sam knew and he knew that what he was saying wouldn't ever work out as Sam was his alpha; and it would hurt Bella in the long run.
"I wouldn't worry about that, I have this instinctual need to protect her. Like she's mine and no-one else is allowed to know all her secrets, no-one is allowed to make her smile, no-one else is allowed to touch her… I've never felt this way before. Is it the imprint?" Sam asked him. Jacob was looking at his alpha seriously, Sam was always used to seeing Jacob's smile so he was interested that he was good at doing both.
"I felt like that at first but not quite that strongly, maybe it has something with both of you being wolves" Jacob wondered out loud. They sat there in silence for what felt like hours until they both fell asleep. Bella in between them.
