As hard as Nick tried, he couldn't get the image of little Emily out of his head. She'd been abused for four years before her little body took too much abuse and just gave up on itself. He tossed and turned in bed until he grabbed a pillow, put it over his face and screamed into it.
He felt Greg shift into his side immediately and start coaxing him out from underneath the pillow. "Come on, honey, come out."
When Nick finally did, he didn't see pity or concern. He saw understanding and love. And when he eventually fell asleep, he saw little Emily as an angel, finally finding peace.
