The boss had signed Kevin and Gill off for four days to advise on a case in London. They had met Julie Dodson there and went to interview a suspect. However, after the second day they got a confession. The rain had stopped and the sun came out; it was too nice to drive back to Manchester.

"How about a day at the beach?" Julie suggested with a cheeky smile.

"Oh my God, I've wanted to go the beach for ages!" Kevin jumped up and down like a little child.

"That...is actually a very good plan!" Gill agreed, getting back into her car. "Where do you want to go?"

"Hmmm" Julie thought aloud "Southend?"

"There's a funfair there!" Kevin squealed with excitement.

The three of them got in the car and began to drive to the beach. Gill hadn't been around those parts of London much so didn't really know where she was going; Julie was left in charge of trying to read the map and Kevin sat in the back with a bag of Jelly babies.

"Left here" Julie said turning the map one way and then the other.

"Right" Gill replied, preparing to turn the car.

"No I said left" Julie shouted.

"I said right"

"LEFT!" Julie shouted louder.

"I meant right as in okay!" Gill laughed, Julie soon following suit.

Kevin was oblivious. "Are we there yet?" he asked like a petulant sulky kid.

"NO!" Julie and Gill called together.

Traffic built up ahead as the silver Vauxhall entered the Olympic borough.

"Great" Gill sighed, leaning her head back against the head rest.

"Is now a good time to tell you I had the map upside down?" Julie said quietly and nervously.

"I should have got a bloody monkey to read the map, would have done a better job than you, you fat-arsed bitch!"

"Well shall I pass the map to Kevin, mad bitch?" Julie shot back.

"What?" Kevin asked hearing his name, but having no idea what was actually happening.

"Don't you worry your little head, you don't need to read the map, you might get a paper cut!" Julie laughed as she turned her head back to face the window next to her, so Kevin could not see that she was only joking.

As the traffic started to move Gill took the next left turning to go back on herself. They made it a mile down the road in an awkward silence before Kevin piped up again.

"I need a wee!" he complained.

"Well you'll just have to wait" Gill told him, like a mother would tell her small son.

Another few hundred yards passed before Julie decided to do something about the silence and turned the radio up. Gill wasn't a fan of loud music when she was driving; it was unprofessional in her opinion. But this was no ordinary day. George Harrison's 'I've Got My Mind Set On You' came on the radio and Julie began to hum to herself.

"Oh I love this one!" she smiled, turning the radio up louder. Her fingers tapped against the steering wheel and she sang along, clearly out of tune.

'I got my mind set on you set on you

But it's gonna take money a whole lotta spending money
It's gonna take plenty of money to do it right child
It's gonna take time a whole lotta precious time
It's gonna take patience and time mmm to do it to do it
To do it to do it to do it to do it right

I got my mind set on you I got my mind set on you'

"Where's the bloody vet when you need one?" Kevin shouted over the singing, putting a finger in each ear.

"SET ON YOU" Gill sang louder to wind Kevin up.

"Look!" Kevin exclaimed "I can see the sea!"

"About bloody time" Gill sighed in relief as she turned the car towards a parking space.

Kevin jumped out of the car before Gill had even switched the engine off and ran straight for the water. Julie and Gill stood by the bonnet laughing to themselves as they watched their 'colleague' splashing about in the water.

"This has to be the Best. Day. Ever!"
