Everybody knew that Artemis hated inarticulation of sentences. He preferred it when people talked to him with proper English language, and not slang. But even Artemis makes exceptions.

That exception was Grace.

Grace could make him do things he wouldn't have dreamt of doing, like pulling a stupid face to make her laugh, or reading a story in funny voices, or talking gibberish. Grace was very special to him.

It was early evening. The sun's rays cast out a golden light over Artemis' room, making the carpet a rich red, and the table an oakish brown. Artemis himself was seated against his chair, proofreading his latest scientific discovery (although he didn't think it needed any changes) which was nearly ready to be sent off to the Royal Institute of Science (AN: I don't know if that's a thing) to be marvelled at and read by the lesser crowds.

A babble made him look up. Of all the things you'd expect Artemis to have in his room, you wouldn't expect to see a bright pink cot near to the bed. Artemis got up and made his way over to it.

He was greeted by the sight of a 9 month old girl smiling up at him. Artemis felt his cold demeanour slipping and sliding away as he smiled back at her.

"Hello," he said, picking her up. He received more baby babble in response. Grace still hadn't spoken her first word, despite being the right age to do so. He rocked her gently then out her on the floor so she could run around. She made straight for the bookcase, and pulled out a book, before running back to Artemis and giving it to him.

Artemis chuckled. "Oh, how very smart," he laughed, taking the book from her and opening it up. It was a reading book, The Princess and the Frog. Grace gazed up at him with hopeful eyes.

"How can I resist that?" he said, picking her up and putting her in his lap as he sat down on the bed to finish reading the story.

A while later, Grace was playing on his lap and the book lay discarded to one side.

"Who's daddy's pwecious?" cooed Artemis, tickling the small girl, making her giggle. "You are the cutest, yes you are!"

She babbled at him again and he babbled back. "Swuch a cwutie you are!"

"Da-dee."

Artemis froze.

"Da-dee," Grace said again, looking up at Artemis.

"Oh my god! Are you... Are you talking?" yelped Artemis. "Can you say it again? Daddy?"

"Daddy!" repeated the small girl smiling happily at him.

Artemis smiled back. "BUTLER!" he yelled.

Butler came rushing in, Sig Sauer drawn. Artemis waved it away impatiently.

"Get the camera out Butler! Grace is saying her first words!" he said excitedly. "Come on Grace! Who am I?"

"Daddy!" smiled the girl. Butler's eyes widened, and he ran.

"Juliet!" he shouted to his younger sister. "We need the camera! Grace is saying her first words!"

Juliet shrieked in delight and brought out a bright blue camera. "Let's go!"

As they approached the door, they could hear Artemis saying, "You are scho cute! Yesch you are!"

The two exchanged glances. Nobody could make Artemis talk like that! Well, no one except Grace it seemed. Chatter and laughter drifted out of the window as the 4 of them (with Grace only saying "Daddy" every now and then) exchanged pleasantries and shared their experiences.

They enjoyed a wonderful evening with Grace, who loved all the attention. They were an odd family, yes, but a family, nonetheless.

The end! Whatchya think? Review?!
