I dunno where exactly the idea for this one came from, but here. It's not very long, just a cute little drabble I wrote at work last night.

Enjoy!

(flashback)

Mello sat up in his bed, hiding underneath his blanket with his laptop. Not much embarrassed the eleven-year-old prodigy; it was hard to embarrass someone who didn't care about what anybody thought of him. The only person whose opinion of him mattered at all to Mello was that of his best friend Matt.

And if Matt could see Mello right now, watching Titanic for the umpteenth time, with tears running down his cheeks, he knew he'd never hear the end of it. Oh sure, Matt had seen Mello hiding under his covers with his laptop before, often even hearing a sniffle or two, but the blond always claimed that he was just studying for a big upcoming test, and the sniffles were attributed to allergies. But the truth was it was always him breaking down into tears at the scene where Rose jumped from the lifeboat back onto the ill-fated ship and ran back to find Jack, running into his arms and saying:

"You jump, I jump, remember?" Mello quoted in a choked whisper along with the movie.

(present day)

Mello came back to his and Matt's room, looking as if he'd just been punched in the gut. His mind was reeling; he felt as if he'd never get over the shock of the news he'd just heard.

"What's up Mels?" Matt asked, noticing the blank expression on his boyfriend's face. "What did the old man want?"

Mello didn't answer right away. Instead he sat down on his bed and looked down at the floor. "It's L," he finally said. "He's...he's dead. Kira killed him."

Matt gasped. "Oh my God, no!"

"Yes, Matt. It's true," Mello said, tears streaming down his face. "And...I'm leaving here."

"What?! Why?"

"To avenge him," he explained. "My way. He never chose a successor between Near and me before his death, so Roger wanted us to team up and-" the blond teen shuddered at the thought. "I just can't. So I'm letting Near handle taking over for L his way, and I'm going to handle things my way. And that means leaving."

"But Mello, I-"

"Don't try to talk me out of it, Matt," Mello said firmly. "I've made up my mind."

Matt sat on his bed, crying silently as the blond chocoholic he loved so dearly rummaged through their shared closet for his suitcase. He had just lost his idol, now he was going to lose Mello too? He couldn't let that happen.

"I'm going with you."

Mello turned to face him. "Come again?"

"I said I'm coming with you," Matt repeated.

"No Matt, you can't," he said. "I don't know what I'm getting into right away, and I need you to stay here in case something happens. Kira's dangerous...I mean, even L couldn't take him down. I don't want you putting yourself in harm's way...I'd never forgive myself if Kira killed you too..."

"Mello, I mean it. I want to come with you," Matt insisted. He paused for a moment before adding, "You jump, I jump, Mello."

The blond stared at him. Matt stared back, his green eyes filling with tears and causing his goggles to fog up. Then Mello threw himself at the redhead, crushing their lips together.

"Fine, you can come with me," he said after breaking the kiss, "As long as you promise me one thing.

Matt smiled. "I'll never let go Mello," he said. "I promise."
