I dreamed once so long ago,
Of a place to make a home.
With a woman I loved dearly,
The honeymoon would never end.
I dreamed once so long ago,
When there was nothing left to dream for.
My wife stolen from my arms,
Her killer on the loose.
I dreamed once so long ago,
Justice would be served for her.
And yet they sent me to the gallows,
For a crime I didn't commit.
I dreamed once so long ago,
I would get a second chance.
A train derailed and set me running,
A chance to prove my innocence.
I dreamed once so long ago,
The sirens would fade away,
Taking the nightmares with them.
So I wouldn't have to fear the shadows.
I dreamed once so long ago,
I met beautiful women and twisted men.
Some I loved, some I hated,
Some I wished I'd never left.
I dreamed once so long ago,
I caught the one armed man.
I felt his flesh crushed in mine,
Before he slipped away.
I dreamed once so long ago,
I'd see the country I love.
But never did I think I'd see it,
Running from a lawman's gun.
I dreamed once so long ago,
Of when the time would come,
When I no longer called the highway home.
My bones ache with weariness.
I dreamed once so long ago,
I finally corner my foe.
"Yeah, I killed her!" he cried.
The sweet words I longed to hear.
I dreamed not so long ago,
I walked out of court a free man.
The trouble now is after all the running,
Where do I go from here?
