Hello

"Dad," a black-haired boy called to his father, "can I call Mai?"

Oliver Davis halted his steps at the sudden question of his son. He finished his responsibilities in the university earlier today, so he was able to fetch Kai from school. They have just arrived home and, as he was about to unlock the door, Kai asked the question.

"Why?" he answered.

"Um…" the boy looked up to him with hesitation.

Oliver was not indifferent. Actually, he more curious as to why Kai only asked this question now. He's been sure that Kai wanted to talk with the woman ever since she returned to Japan. He can still clearly remember how Mai had promised his son to answer his calls whenever, even on the dead of the night.

"Well, never mind," Kai said. The 8-year-old boy went inside the house. Oliver watched him as he made his way up to the stairs.

"Kai," Oliver called out.

"Yes?"

The professor reached for the phone inside the pocket of his slacks and punched Mai's name in the directory. He gestured his hands to Kai, who had ceased upon the call of his name, to come down.

"Here," Oliver extended his arm as his son descended the steps. Kai grabbed his phone and looked up to him.

"Can I?"

Oliver nodded in response and a small smile crept on his lips when he saw a sparkle on Kai's eyes.

Without a second thought, Kai pressed the call icon and held the phone on his ears. There was a slight pause as the international call was connecting. After a few seconds, a ring could be heard and a little later, a feminine voice spoke on the other line.

"Moshi-Moshi. Naru, you called?" Kai felt his heart fluttered as he heard the voice. He did not understand any of it, though. It was speaking in Japanese.

"Moshi-Moshi?"

"Kai?"

Kai's heart fluttered for the second time. He turned to his father with eyes full of excitement. Oliver raised his brows and nodded to Kai as an assurance for him to continue.

"Is tha—"

"Hello?" Kai interjected.

A pause happened before the voice replied.

"Hello, Kai," it said, "How are you?"

"I'm good. How about you?"

A chuckle could be heard as a reply. "I'm good, too!" it beamed. "Well, do you need something Kai?"

Mai had just arrived at the church. She was preparing to start her shift when she received a call from Naru. It has been 2 weeks since she returned from London and she has yet to receive any calls from Kai. She secretly hoped that this was what she had been waiting for and was very happy to know that it was when she answered. She dropped her shoulder bag on her desk and sat down. She looked at her wristwatch and found that she still has 30 minutes until the start of her work. She figured she could get some positive energy from the call to start her day.

"Um," Mai could feel the hesitation from the other line, "no. Nothing. Is now not good?"

Mai felt a squeeze in her chest. "No! It's ok. It's good." The brunette could hear a sigh of relief from Kai. "Did you just come home from school, Kai?"

"Yes!"

"How's school, then."

"It was fun. We talked about animals and ecosystems today. Dad fetched me from school today," Kai said in one breath, clearly getting giddier from talking with Mai.

"I see. I see. What did you learn in school?"

Oliver observed the boy. Kai was pacing around the living room with his free hand flaring around as he tried to explain his day to the lady on the phone. Oliver can evidently see the delight painted on his son's face.

"Why didn't this kid ask for a call until now?" he asked himself.

Oliver went to the kitchen and grabbed some chocolate chip cookies and milk from the fridge. He prepared a little snack for Kai as dinner is still a few hours away. He went to the living room and placed the snacks on the coffee table. Kai was now sitting on the sofa with a big book on his lap, seemingly reading a passage in it to Mai. Oliver grabbed his son's bag which was left unattended on the floor. He went upstairs to Kai's room and placed the bag on the study table. He then went to his own room and changed his clothes. As he returned to the living room, he saw Kai munching on a cookie while talking. He tapped the boy's shoulder stealing his attention momentarily.

"After that, go upstairs and get changed."

Kai nodded sharply and returned his attention back to the disturbed activity.

Oliver heard Mai's muffled voice over the phone. Then, he heard Kai answered, "Dad told me to change my clothes after this."

Oliver could feel another smile threatening to form on his lips. Before it could happen, he went to the kitchen and made a cup of tea for himself. He went back to the living room and sat on the sofa across Kai.

The call has gone on for 20 minutes now. Oliver heard the occasional mention of grandmother, grandfather, Aunt Madoka, and Uncle Lin. Mai was probably asking about them.

"Dad's less busy these days. He often fetches me from school."

Oliver jerked his head up at the statement. His eyes met his son's. He wouldn't have noticed the small smirk hiding on his son's lips if he was another person. He wrinkled his brows in question but Kai broke his gaze in response.

"Do you want to talk with him? I can give the phone if you want," Kai said.

Oliver couldn't hear Mai's response.

The little boy nodded. "Ok. Thank you for talking with me Mai. Can I call you again next time?"

His scowl was getting deeper, skirmishing the huge smile that appeared on Kai's visage.

"OK!" Then, Kai offered the phone to Oliver. "She wants to talk with you," he said as he extended his hand.

Oliver accepted the phone while looking suspiciously at his son. Before putting it on his ears, he reminded Kai to get changed upstairs. The boy shrugged his shoulders and quickly go. Oliver sighed and held the phone to his ears.

"Mai."

"Naru."

An awkward silence arose between them. Oliver cleared his throat. Coincidentally, he heard Mai did the same.

"Ah, so," Mai started, switching back to Japanese. "How are you?"

"Fine. How about you?" He responded.

"Fine, too."

"Kai was really excited while talking with you."

Oliver could hear a laugh from the phone. He had quite missed that.

"Yeah. I can feel. Why did he call just now?"

"I don't know. You should have called him."

"Well, yeah…" a slightly guilty voice answered.

Oliver sighed. "He's probably not sure whether it's OK to call you or not."

"I did tell him that it's OK to call me anytime he wants to. Remind him for me, Naru."

"Are you willing to pay the bills for the international calls, then?"

A loud and annoyed grumble was a reply he received.

"Shut up. I know you're rich, professor!"

A smirk found its way to Oliver's face.

"Yes. Yes, I am," he smugly replied.

"Arg. Whatever,"

"You're at the church?"

"Yeah. Just arrived, actually. Ah no, about 25 minutes ago. I'll be starting in a few minutes,"

"Well, I shouldn't stall you any longer. Thanks for talking with Kai,"

"No, it was nothing. I enjoyed talking with him. I did miss the boy,"

"I see."

"..."

"..."

"..."

"Mai?"

"Ah, yes?"

"Goodbye for now. Call me anytime you need something,"

"Same to you. Call me whenever you need,"

Oliver nodded. Not that Mai could see it.

"Well, goodbye, Naru,"

"Goodbye, Mai"

Oliver waited until Mai ended the call. He dropped his phone on the table and rested his back on the couch. He sighed and felt the tension he had left his body. It felt like some weight has been lifted away from him.

"That was awkward!" Mai said to herself as she ended the call with Naru. She was really happy being able to talk with Kai, but she never thought the boy would offer to give the phone to his father. She could still feel her heart beating rowdily in her chest.

"Gosh," she whispered as she crossed her arms together on the desk and laid her head. She was still embarrassed, and undeniably happy, about the hug that happened at the airport. She would definitely go back and help Kai with her utmost best. She didn't know how and where to start, but she would do whatever she can do to help the two.

After a few minutes, Mai finally calmed her nerves. She looked at her watch and saw that she only had 3 minutes until the start of her shift. She quickly grabbed a small mirror from her bag and checked her face for the last time.

"OK. Let's start our day, Mai," she said as she slapped her two palms to her cheeks.
