Reid sits - barely breathing, barely moving - while Henry sleeps sprawled against him. One little arm was wrapped around Spencer's own. JJ had just needed to run an errand, and had promised to be back soon. She even waited, visiting with him, until Henry fell asleep in her arms and then deftly transferred the baby to Spencer.

JJ has been gone 38 minutes. Henry hasn't stirred. But wait - he spoke too soon. Shoot.

"Hey, Henry. What's wrong?" he asks as the baby fusses. At two months old, he can hardly answer. His only means of communication now is crying at various levels of intensity. It's a guessing game trying to figure out what's wrong. Spencer bounces Henry, pats him, but nothing works.

Finally, Spencer risks checking out the diaper. Only wet. He can handle wet. Right?

It takes an obscene length of time before Spencer finally secures tape on the diaper with the monkey face on it. That soothes Henry for all of five minutes.

Then he is screaming - screaming like he's being tortured - which most definitely is not happening. It's not until Henry starts rooting around and sucking hard on Spencer's arm - hard enough to leave a mark - that it comes clear.

Henry's hungry.

Henry's hungry and JJ didn't leave any bottles.

Henry doesn't take bottles.

The baby sucks for four minutes until he gives up, realizing that sustenance will not simultaneously flow from a human arm, as it does from certain other parts of the anatomy. Then he screams again. Long and sad. Spencer glances around for some idea of what to do, but how is he supposed to know what to do? He was raised an only child.

"I'm so sorry, Henry. I just can't help you with this."

He thinks about calling JJ but that's not an option. So, he does what he thought he never would. He sang.

"Close your eyes. Have no fear. The monster's gone. He's on the run, and…I am here…" he trailed off, waiting for Henry to be soothed.

He isn't, but that's the precise second when JJ unlocks the front door and lets herself in. She is smiling. Her eyes light up when she sees the baby, even though he's still inconsolable.

"I'm sorry. He's hungry and I couldn't…"

"Hey, my little buddy. Come here," she coos at the baby. "Thanks, Spencer," she says, arranging some kind of curtain over herself, so Henry can eat and her modesty can be protected. It's printed with yellow ducks. Spencer counts 23 before he catches himself and averts his eyes.

"Yeah, you're… You're welcome. Maybe Garcia's a better choice, though. I don't know anything about babies…"

"You did fine," JJ insists and smiles.

"We miss you at work."

"I like the break, but I miss you guys, too. It'll be good to get back to it," she says.

"Well, I guess I'll leave…unless you need me for something else.." he hedges. What kind of a question is that when she has Will here?

"Nope. We're good. Hey, Spence?" she calls as he is heading for the door.

He pauses. Turns.

"Next time, remember, the monkey faces the front."

He squints, thinking it's some kind of secret code, until he remembers the diaper he put on her child. Backward, evidently.

"Right. Got it," he promised, laughing softly on his way out the door.
