Seth was shocked at his dad's reaction to the bad news. He expected his dad to…
Well, he wasn't exactly sure what he expected him to do. Silence and a blank stare: he had not even considered a possibility.
Sandy's heart fell out of his chest when he heard the news. His eyes immediately swelled with tears as he turned away from the doctor's pitying look.
He doesn't remember who drove him and the boys home. He figured it was probably Julie or Jimmy. The ride was silent; words weren't attainable, much less necessary. Once parked outside of the Cohen house, everyone slowly made motion to get out of the confined space. Everyone besides Sandy. He was in a trance. Tears pooled in his eyes not yet falling.
"Dad?" Seth asked meekly. His father didn't look him in the eye but did move and get out of the car. Seth and the others stood waiting by the car. Obviously, everyone else also expected a different reaction.
An awkward atmosphere descended, as they all seemed to push their emotions aside to concentrate on Sandy and his lack thereof. He didn't seem to catch on.
He walked straight to the front door, inserted his key, and opened the door.
He walked into the silent house and a few tears slipped through his eyelids.
He didn't know this would hurt as bad as it did.
He suddenly felt a hand on his shoulder, which he recognized as Seth's without visual confirmation. It made him blink. A sign to the rest of the world that he was still alive.
He walked down the steps of the foyer and continued walking toward the master bedroom. He was aware of eyes following him but it didn't affect him. Nothing mattered. They let him go, knowing he didn't want anything they could offer.
He walked into the room. His room, her room, their room. He made his way over to their bed. He looked at her side. Her pillow. Her nightstand, where a picture of them together rested.
He slowly lowered himself onto her side of the bed, feeling where her body weight had left a small indention in their Tempur-Pedic mattress – although, he was probably the only one who could have noticed.
He rested his head on her pillow. He buried his nose in it, closed his eyes, and breathed in her scent. It overwhelmed him and a few tears slipped out.
He picked his head up and opened his eyes, which came to rest on the picture. He saw how happy they were. He remembered when they took the picture.
They were at a party and he asked Julie to take a quick picture. Kirsten had been asking him to go with her so they could get a professional picture made. However, he had remained adamant that candids were better. That night he had actually brought a camera.
As Julie got the camera ready and Kirsten prepared to have her picture taken, Sandy whispered a witty remark in Kirsten's ear. Her smile became authentic and Sandy opted to watch her laugh, instead of watching the camera.
He loved watching her laugh. Loved watching her smile. Loved watching her. Tears swarmed his eyes as he realized he would never get the chance again.
An empty feeling spread over him. He pulled her pillow closer to him and breathed her scent in again, hoping for comfort.
"Kirsten…" he whispered as he closed his eyes and prayed for sleep. Because that's where she was. Waiting. Always. Forever.
Please tell me what you think b/c I'm very unsure about this one.
