A lost Life

Disclaimer:

PotC and its characters don't belong to me – well, same thing as in every fanfiction lol

A/N:

This was inspired by a song from the official Titanic soundtrack and a reader of a German story of mine. Said song has no lyrics, only "Ah"'s, but its sadness did the trick. A few spoilers for AWE, but nothing you couldn't have guessed by now… I think. Actually it is only one thing.

It wasn't like he had always been the way he was now. He had had dreams, ambitions and targets. Had wanted to love and be loved by a woman… Pirates had never interested him much… he just despised them.

But life had played its odd games with him. It had turned him into a cruel, bewigged man who only cared about himself. A man whose life consisted of making deals with anyone regardless of who or what they were, arresting those who didn't do what he wanted them to.

He couldn't say his life had been a total waste… but true happiness had always been missing. It was something that no large amount of money, no bought loyalty or received honour could give him.

Taking one last look at the sky above him, Lord Beckett accepted his fate. He was about to die, there was no way out of it. And maybe this was the best thing that could happen. Who'd still see him as a human being?

Yes, there had once been that woman. A beautiful woman who cared more about others than she would ever care about herself. He had adored her. Had bought her expensive and exotic presents, had showered her with compliments and affections – but then she had told him that all she wanted was his love. That had been the end. He hadn't understood her. Then.

Beckett took the first step down the stairs that led to the deck which was already being destroyed by the pirate's cannonballs. Then, suddenly, the helm splintered into a thousand pieces behind him. But he didn't even flinch. Who cared if he got pierced by a piece of wood and died or if he sank with the ship? He definitely did not.

Slowly, Beckett made his way downstairs, his feet finally touching the deck. Around him, everything burst into a million pieces, a few of them even striking him… but he didn't notice. This was the absolute disaster, he was right in the middle of it, but he didn't care the slightest bit.

Then, finally, but still too soon, he heard a mighty rumble behind him. He didn't turn around.

One last time, Beckett tried to think of someone whose face he should remember, but didn't find one. Moments later, an explosion destroyed the ship; its flames making the man disappear within seconds. No cry or any other sound of pain could be heard from the ship, the only sound Beckett made was a small whisper: "I deserve it."

The End
