Maria sighed, snuggling more deeply into Michael's lap. A smile played across her face as he watched her friends. Alex was playing Frisbee with Isabel, who had thawed a lot since the whole destiny drama unfolded.
Max and Liz sat at one of the park's picnic tables, studying. The dating habits of science geeks, Maria thought with a mental shake of her head. But they looked blissfully happy together.
Maria was glad the whole Tess thing was no longer an issue. Max had come right out and said exactly what was on his mind. "This whole destiny has gotten way out of hand. How did they know if we would fall in love with each other? Or even in I would be a good leader? They didn't. I'll help them if I can, but not at the expense of my life. What I do know is that I have felt this connection with Liz since that day at the Crashdown, and it's too strong to fight. and, to be honest, I don't want to fight it. I'm happy. And if you can't deal with that, maybe it would be best if you left."
A nice polite way to put "Be Nice or Be Gone", Maria thought, laughing a little to herself.
"What's so funny?" Michael asked, his breath warm on her ear.
"Nothing. But, Spaceboy, if you ever find that you need to cruise the stars, fight the bad guys, or whatever, I won't stop you. But I will wait for you, so you'd better not lose your way home."
"Even if I did, all I'd have to do is follow my heart right back to your arms."
Maria laughed, the sound carrying on the breeze. "That is the cheesiest thing I have ever heard in my entire life."
"Really? But it's honest cheese." Michael replied, the sound of laughter in his voice unmistakable.
"Honest cheese? Well, everyone knows that's the best kind," Maria whispered, pressing her lips to his.
And right there, to the music of Isabel whacking Alex with a Frisbee, and Max and Liz comparing the mating habits of sloths, Michael Guerin happily made Maria DeLuca his destiny.
THE END
A/N: Can we all tell I adore happy endings? And a belated explanation as to the shortness of part 1. I wasn't sure how it would come up, since this was my first fic here, so I was sort of testing the waters. The next parts were better. Thanx!!
