A/N: A totally random piece about the end of tonight's episode. The title has nothing to do with the fic, really, except that's its from "Walking By" by Something Corporate, the other half of the inspiration for the story. Blame Becs for the format, she loves 'odd formats'. Don't ask where it came from, even I don't know. It just sort of happened.
Summary: What makes it so easy, for you to keep walking by?
"Better take the keys and drive forever, staying won't put these pieces back together again." - Aimee Mann.
She knew that look. That "please forgive me, Kirsten" look. Kirsten had seen it so many times she'd lost count. It was like trying to figure out how much wine you've had to drink - after awhile you just begin to lose count. You forget - let it get lost in the fog. Kirsten lost count years ago. She'd loved so unconditionally that she'd chosen to forget - bent so far that she'd almost broke and then done it again.
(What does he expect me to do?)
Kirsten watched him walk away, and it felt so final.
(God damnit, Sandy.)
She couldn't face that look again. He slunk through the door an hour later, like a lost puppy - the way he always did - he expected her to forgive him.
She couldn't.
(It wasn't supposed to end like this.)
They had done this dance before, always with the same result. This time had to be different.
(I'm sorry.)
The door roared as she slammed it - the bang echoed in her ears.
The oak wood felt cool against her forehead as she leaned against it. The tears hot and salty against her cheeks, staining her bright red dress with battle wounds. She was losing him and there was nothing she could do about it.
(Goodbye.)
It was over.
- Fin.
