Chapter 1
Jamie's Big Heart
Jamie lay in the hospital bed with a great deal of sweat at her white feet as she attempted to give birth to Landon's so-called child. She was only six months along and was due early because of her accidents. Once, she had accidentally fallen out of the back of Landon's truck as she leaned too far over trying to signal the police because her collar was on too tight. She didn't know her leash was attached to the toolbox and was dragged at 60 miles per hour alongside the tires for several hours. It was either that or the time that Landon and Jamie were skating down Loafie Lane and Landon "accidentally" let go of her hand as she flew straight into Eric's arms. Eric, thinking he was being assaulted, threw her down the street as she continued to skate into oncoming traffic. Jamie was brought back to reality by Landon's hard slap on her head.
"Jamie, stop lollygagging. Doctor Shorts is talking to you and he's tired of you flirting with him."
Doctor Shorts stepped closer to Jaime and looked her straight in the eyes. "Jamie, what do you want on your hotdog, ketchup or mustard? Your insurance doesn't cover both."
"Hotdog?" Jamie asked sleepily.
"I said, 'do you want C-section or regular birth? Your insurance doesn't cover both.'" Doctor Shorts replied.
That was the last thing Jamie remembered. Jamie never knew that while asleep, a sign was pinned to her feet that said "Yard Sale- does free tricks when slapped on the head" in bold letters. That night Jamie was slapped on the head thousands of times or close to it, which was why she didn't remember. The next morning she woke up with enormous pain from her enormous premies, one black, one brown, already feeding from her petite mosquito bites, which was what Landon called them.
From the corner of her eye she saw something big and pink, which reminded her of her mother because she was overweight and always wore a pink dress on Sundays.
"Mom? Am I dreaming?" Jamie asked hopefully.
"Oink!" said the pig lying in the bed next to hers, which was more luxurious and cleaner than hers would ever be. Doctor Shorts ran up beside the pig and covered him with a woolen blanket and changed the channel for the pig.
"Jamie, I want to thank you for that big heart of yours." Doctor Shorts said as his eyes glistened with tears.
"What do you mean, doctor?" Jamie asked confused.
Landon walked over to her and silently pulled the sheets over her head as if she were as good as dead.
"She's probably still tired from the heart transplant, which is why she doesn't remember" Landon said matter-of-factly.
"Landon, thank you for Jamie's heart. My pig is now recovering and Jamie will live a short but happy life."
Suddenly Jamie opens her eyes widely from under the sheet. "They took my heart?" she asked in horror.
Landon and Doctor Shorts looked at the talking sheet, then to each other, shrugged, and walked away.
