Fate is possibly the most screwy-est thing ever.

Squall's in a corner. Moping. Again. Wondering why so many horrible things happened to us, and not the kid. He realizes that all our situations were almost exactly alike, but somehow he came out practically unscathed while we became a bunch of hopeless broken-down wrecks who pretend that we still have a future ahead of us even though deep deep deeeeep down inside ourselves us wrecks knew that our fifteen minutes of fame were over and we're used up and decaying.

Squall refuses to step aside for the new generation. Funny thing is, fate has a way of not giving a rat's ass about what you want; the best thing to do is step aside quietly and let her through, or you're gonna get trampled like a blade of glass in the way of an elephant stampede. But it's Squall we're talking about, he would rather get ground into dust than show any sign that he's giving up. But it's fate. She sure doesn't give a damn whether or not a broken-down wreck who's still clinging to the only bit of his ego he still had left decided that he'll try and go up against her.

Cause she knows that he can't change anything.

And he knows that he can't change anything.

But he tries anyways.

And fails.

And crushes whatever false hope he had left that he could actually change something.

Jackass can't even change his fucking name, for god's sake.

So he hastily covers up that he had been trying to take the glory for himself, and pretends that he was trying to help the kid all along, pretends that he knows what's going on, pretends that he's the great mentor character who's only wish is to guide the hero along his quest. Pretends that there isn't a spark of jealousy that no matter how much he tried to stamp out, was still there.

And the poor little kid believes him. Believes that he was as great as he pretended he was. Believes that he knew everything he pretended to know. Believes that he wasn't a broken-down wreck who was still clinging to the only bit of his ego he still had left by pretending he was still being the hero in some indirect way.

And the most screwed up part was that the kid, listening to his advice, actually saved the day.

No, scratch the possibly.

Fate is the most screwy-est thing ever.

A/N: Yes, I thought I'll never update on this story ever again too, but after reading some very, very, good drabbles inspiration finally came back. And Yuffie is in angry emo angsty mood right now, which would conveniently explain her sudden up in maturity. And I tried writing Leon from a different point of view, though I don't think many people would like this version of him. And I took down the first chapter because it was sucky, might try writing it again later.
