Elliot likes playing the 'what if?' game with Carla. They sit on Elliot's lumpy bed -- the one she bought after everything she owned disappeared one afternoon -- in her small closet of an apartment with half-empty glasses of good red wine. They always start with an awkward silence and shallow small talk, but after the third glass they bend their heads together to smile and laugh.
Elliot always starts their game. She sways, cheeks red and head spinning from the alcohol, and leans her forehead into the junction of Carla's shoulder and throat.
Elliot whispers "what if?" and turns her pounding head to press her lips against Carla's throat. Carla giggles at that, fingers coming up to tangle in Elliot's blond hair. Her wedding ring catches in the strands, but she refuses to take it off. "It'd be like cheating," she says with a lilt in her voice, and slaps playfully at Elliot's shoulder to let her know none of this is real. Elliot's smile is a big fat lie, but she waves her hand airily anyway. "Just a thought, you know, trying to protect my hair here!" Her head tilts to the side with her nervous laugh and then Carla's kissing her with wide, soft lips.
There's friendship and warmth in Carla's kiss; every little thing they don't have in common she paints on Elliot's lips with the tip of her tongue. Elliot brings her hands up to frame Carla's face.
"If I didn't have Turk," Carla begins their lie, "I'd never be friends with you." Elliot nods, parting her lips and slanting her head to get at the sweet warmth of Carla's mouth. "If I didn't love JD," Elliot says with every butterfly kiss she presses to Carla's lips, forehead, chin, ear, "I'd never even think about you."
When Elliot's hands press against Carla's breasts and both their breaths hitch at the same time, they smile into their kiss and lie and lie and lie.
"If I didn't love someone else, I'd always be with you."
