Chapter 1
A/N I do not own Band of Brothers or the men involved, all rights reserved for HBO, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. I also hope that the real Dick Winters and Lewis Nixon up in heaven aren't too upset over this.
This chapter is based off of the scene in "Day of Days" when Winters (Damian Lewis) and Nixon (Ron Livingston) are discussing the death of John Hall (Andrew Scott).
Winters was stood outside the truck, drinking from his canteen when his best friend, Nixon, a tall man with dark hair, emerged from the truck to speak to him. "Hey man". The flame haired soldier nodded in response to the other's greeting.
"Compton told me about Hall…and that you feel that it was you fault". Winters looked away from Nixon, not wanting to face the fact that his was responsible for a fellow soldier's death.
"Look…" began Nixon, "whatever happened…" he trailed off, "he wasn't even in Easy".
Winters had tears in his eyes, he thought he had gotten used to death, he obviously hadn't. "Look Nix, I was looking after him, we landed next to each other on the jump, and I was going to help him find his company".
"I know, how did it happen, anyway? I wasn't there I was with Luz, looking for Perconte."
Winters composed himself to retell the events of the day. "It was when I took out some of the men to take out the German 105s around Utah beach, and we took Hall 'cause he hadn't found his company… So we head on over and take position, I kept Hall close to me so I could keep an eye on him, and we attack. We take out the first gun easy, they didn't see it coming. Then they obviously catch wind of what's going on…there's grenades going off everywhere and then Popeye gets shot in the ass so Lipton takes him to the medic, we take out the next with a little difficulty, but we do it."
Nixon is listening with the upmost concentration. "Then we're left with the last two, Compton is shot in the arm but carries on, he's out for blood. Then as we're taking out the third Hall comes over to me and asks if he can go and get the TNT ready for the final gun. I shouldn't have let him, but I was so caught up in what I was doing that I let him, alone…Then I went to check on him and he was just lying there, a grenade got him and his face was burnt and-"
Winters stopped when he felt a hand fall on his shoulder to comfort him, it was Nixon. "Calm down, Dick" comforted Nixon, "don't get so wound up about it".
Winters wiped some tears away from his cheek. "Y'know he was only twenty? Not even old enough to buy a drink, the poor son-of-a-bitch"
The pair stood in silence for a few moments, before Nixon motioned back towards the truck. "We're having a bite to eat if you want some".
"No" replied Winters, "Malarkey keeps farting, that's why I came outside in the first place".
Nixon nodded, "Okay", and proceeded to climb back into the truck before poking his head outside one last time, "Oh, and, don't feel too bad about Hall, you are not that handsome when you're upset", he disappeared into the truck.
Winters smiled to himself and looked up to the sky to be met with the sight of Bombers flying out to bomb Carentan; and he made a vow to himself in his silence, that if he were ever to survive this war, he would find a quiet, calm, peaceful place in the world to live.
A/N Hope you like it! Sorry for it being so short and I hope to add more chapters in the future! - Taylor xxx
